Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Best Friend of 40 Years Thought His Wife Would Never Wake Up After She Was Rushed Into My ER—But I Found Something on Her Chest That Made Me Suspicious. So When He Arrived and Asked, “Did She Say Anything?” I Looked Him in the Eye and Lied: “Not a Word.” His Reaction Told Me I’d Asked the Right Question and He Had Just Made the Biggest Mistake of His Life

Part 2 of 3

“Doctors think she’ll wake up?”

“Too early to say.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Can I see her?”

“Not yet.”

His voice changed.

Only a little.

“Andrew, I’m her husband.”

“I know.”

“Then why can’t I see my wife?”

I looked at the evidence bag sitting on Sarah’s desk across the hall.

“Because right now, Daniel, she needs rest.”

He said nothing.

For the first time in forty years, I ended a call with Daniel without saying goodbye.

And for the first time since Laura had arrived in my ER, I knew we had done something he hadn’t expected.

We had kept her alive long enough to speak.

What I Never Told Laura

Laura remained in the hospital for four days.

Daniel was told she was still medically unstable and could not have visitors.

During those four days, I learned more about my oldest friend than I had learned in the previous forty years.

But there was one thing Laura learned about me.

It happened the third evening.

I brought her coffee from the downstairs café. Decaf, one sugar. She smiled when I handed it over.

“You still remember.”

“Some things stick.”

She turned the cup between her hands.

“You haven’t asked me why I married him.”

I sat down.

“You loved him.”

Laura looked toward the window.

“I thought I did.”

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Then she said:

“Do you remember graduation night?”

I almost laughed.

“Unfortunately.”

“You disappeared.”

I looked at her.

“I didn’t disappear.”

“You left before the party.”

“Because Daniel told me you weren’t coming.”

Laura slowly put the cup down.

“What?”

There are moments when forty years can disappear in one sentence.

I looked at the floor.

“I was going to ask you out that night.”

She stared at me.

I had never said it aloud.

Not once.

“Daniel told me you were seeing somebody.”

Laura’s mouth opened slightly.

“He told me you were seeing somebody.”

Neither of us moved.

“Who?” I asked.

“A girl from your chemistry class.”

I shook my head.

“There wasn’t anyone.”

Laura looked down at the coffee.

“I waited for you.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“Laura—”

“I waited until almost eleven.”

I didn’t know what to say.

So I told her the only useful truth I had left.

“I loved you.”

Her eyes lifted.

“Back then?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She understood.

For a few seconds, she just watched me.

Then she reached across the space between us and put her hand over mine.

“I loved you too.”

Neither of us said anything else.

There was too much between those two sentences.

A marriage.

Thirty years.

Children who had grown up and moved away.

Birthdays.

Funerals.

Christmases.

Ordinary Tuesdays.

All of it built around choices we had believed were our own.

Then Laura removed her hand.

“We need to know what Daniel did.”

I nodded.

And we went back to the present.

Daniel Came Carrying the Insurance Papers

Sarah wanted to see what Daniel would do if he believed Laura had died.

I hated the idea.

Laura agreed immediately.

Daniel was told there had been a sudden complication.

Then he was told Laura hadn’t survived it.

He arrived at the hospital forty-three minutes later.

He was carrying a leather portfolio.

Sarah and I watched him through the security monitor.

He didn’t sit in the waiting room.

He didn’t ask to see Laura.

He asked for someone from hospital administration.

When Sarah finally brought him down the hall, the portfolio was still under his arm.

She opened Laura’s door.

Daniel stepped inside.

Then stopped.

Laura was sitting on the edge of the bed.

I stood beside her.

Two detectives were behind us.

Daniel’s face went completely blank.

Laura looked at the portfolio.

“What’s in the folder?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Sarah held out her hand.

“Mr. Bennett?”

He looked at her.

“What is this?”

“Please put the folder on the table.”

Daniel didn’t move.

Laura stood.

“You thought I was dead.”

“Laura, listen to me.”

“What’s in the folder?”

His fingers tightened around it.

Sarah stepped closer.

Daniel finally placed it on the table.

Inside were copies of Laura’s insurance policy, marriage certificate, financial records, and contact information for the insurer.

Prepared.

Organized.

Ready.

Laura stared at them.

Then she looked at her husband.

“You didn’t come here to say goodbye.”

Daniel looked at me.

That was the first time his expression changed.

Not when he saw Laura alive.

When he saw me standing beside her.

“Andrew.”

I didn’t answer.

Sarah placed the photograph of the Dexopraline box beside the portfolio.

Then the lab report.

Then she told him the patch removed from Laura had been traced to inventory from his pharmacy.

Daniel lowered himself into the chair.

Laura remained standing.

“You put it on me.”

“Laura—”

“You told me it was magnesium.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I can explain.”

Laura shook her head.

“Then explain why you needed me dead.”

Daniel said nothing.

Sarah did.

“We also recovered searches concerning severe Dexopraline reactions and life-insurance claim procedures.”

Daniel looked toward the door.

One detective moved in front of it.

Laura’s voice became quieter.

“Was it because of her?”

Daniel looked back at her.

She already knew about the woman.

Apparently the investigators had found months of messages.

Plans for Arizona.

Photographs of houses.

A conversation about selling one of Daniel’s pharmacies.

One message had been sent six weeks earlier.

After this is settled, we won’t have to hide anymore.

Laura folded her arms.

“You could have divorced me.”

Daniel looked down.

“It wasn’t that simple.”

“It was exactly that simple.”

He shook his head.
