My Daughter Dropped off My Grandson and Disappeared — Three Weeks Later I Got a Call That Broke My Heart

Part 2 of 2

Over the weeks, I cried my eyes out until suddenly, my phone rang, and it was a video call. My heart leaped into my throat when I saw Jane’s name on the screen. My hands shook as I pressed the “Answer” button and saw my daughter’s face.

“Jane? Where are you? Are you okay?”

There was a long pause on the other end before she responded, looking drained and tired. “Mom, I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry for what? Jane, what’s going on? Where are you?”

“I am fine, Mom, but I can’t tell you where I am. I am on a secret work mission.”

“Jane, you’re scaring me. What’s happening?”

“Don’t worry, Mom. I am safe and okay, and I will be back soon,” my daughter said, failing to convince me.

“I don’t believe you. Why can’t I see you properly?” I questioned.

“Mom! You’re stressing me out! I am fine. Please put Tommy on the phone; I’d like to speak to him.”

I sighed but did as she asked. To avoid talking to me again, as soon as she finished talking to Tommy, she dropped the phone.

When I tried calling back, she didn’t pick up, as the number was off! I sat there wringing my hands, looking at that ominous blue bag…

I’d always been secretive about the identity of Tommy’s father. I knew who he was, but I swore to my mother that I didn’t. The truth about him was far darker… I knew he was a dangerous man.

I happened to hear through the grapevine that he was back in town and knew I had to act fast. I couldn’t let him find out about Tommy’s existence. If he ever did, I worried he might take him, use him, or worse…

I panicked, packed Tommy’s things, and tried to make it look like it was another normal visit with Grandma. But it was different this time. I had to erase any trace of Tommy from my house. That’s why I packed up his clothes and toys.

I even removed his photos from the walls and took them with me. I wasn’t taking any chances in case Alex rocked up at my place and pieced it all together. I knew this meant sacrificing time with my son for weeks, but I couldn’t take chances.

What I knew for sure was that my mom would keep my son safe. But I was sad that I couldn’t tell her the truth. How could I admit I had been lying all along? How could I confess that Tommy’s father wasn’t some forgotten fling, but a very real threat to our family?

Weeks went by with no word from Jane. Each day, I woke up with a pit of dread in my stomach. I wondered daily if today would be the day I’d get a call saying she had been found, or worse, that something had happened to her.

I did my best to keep things normal for my grandson, but it was hard. He asked about his mom every day, and I had to lie, telling him she’d be back soon when in reality, I had no idea if she ever would…

After weeks of living in fear and hearing nothing from Alex, I finally decided it was safe enough to return. My heart ached from missing my son, but I knew I had done what was necessary to protect him.

When Jane arrived, she looked exhausted but relieved. When Tommy saw her, he ran over with a squeal of joy, and for a moment, everything seemed right again! But as I watched them, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t over.

Jane had built her life on secrets and lies, and now they were like a shadow that would follow her everywhere. When she finally picked up the suitcase to leave, her hands trembled slightly, a reminder of the burden she carried.

She turned to me, her eyes filled with gratitude and sorrow all at once.

“Mom,” she said softly, “I can never tell you how much this means to me. But I still can’t tell you anything about my assignment. I’m sorry.”

I nodded, pulling her into a tight hug. “Just promise me you’ll stay safe, Jane. That’s all I ask.”

“I promise,” she whispered, though we both knew

I worried that it was a promise she might not be able to keep.

As I watched her drive away with Tommy, my heart ached with love and fear. I knew she had done what she had to do to protect her son, but I also knew the road ahead would be long and difficult.

The relief of having her back was overwhelming, but the secrets Jane had built would forever haunt her. As they drove off, I stood by the door and whispered a prayer of safety their way… leaving their fate in God’s hands.
