Part 2 of 3

The Hospital Report

At St. Mary’s Children’s Center, Lily refused to let go of Nathan’s hand.

A kind doctor named Dr. Helen Porter examined her carefully. She spoke in a gentle voice, explained every step, and never made Lily feel like she had done something wrong.

After the exam, Dr. Porter asked Nathan to step just outside the curtain.

Her face was serious.

“There is no broken bone,” she said quietly. “But the mark is consistent with a hard impact. It does not look like an ordinary fall.”

Nathan looked through the small gap in the curtain. Lily was sitting on the bed, still clutching her stuffed bunny.

“What happens now?” he asked.

“We document everything,” the doctor replied. “And because this involves a child who says she was hurt at home, we contact family services. The first priority is her safety.”

Nathan nodded, though the words felt heavy.

He had not wanted this night. He had not wanted lawyers, reports, or strangers asking questions. He had wanted his family to be whole.

But a family that required a child to stay silent was not whole.

It was only quiet.

The Woman Who Saw Too Much

Two hours later, Rebecca arrived at the hospital with her mother, Patricia Voss.

Patricia entered first, dressed in an expensive cream coat, her silver hair perfectly styled. She looked less worried about Lily and more worried about being embarrassed.

“Nathan, this is unnecessary,” Patricia said. “You are turning a family matter into a public scene.”

Rebecca stepped toward Lily’s bed with a soft smile that did not reach her eyes.

“Honey, tell them you fell,” she said. “Tell them Daddy got confused.”

Lily shrank back.

A family services worker named Dana Brooks stepped between Rebecca and the bed.

“Lily will speak when she feels safe.”

Rebecca’s expression cracked.

“I am her mother.”

Dana’s voice stayed calm.

“And right now, she is scared.”

Before anyone could say more, Nathan’s phone buzzed.

It was a message from Mrs. Ruth.

“I’m sorry, Nathan. My porch camera recorded part of yesterday evening. I also saw Rebecca leave after Lily cried and stay gone for almost three hours. If you need the video, I have it.”

Nathan read the message twice.

Then he looked at Rebecca.

“Where were you yesterday between seven and ten?”

Rebecca went pale.

“At the pharmacy. Then the store.”

“Mrs. Ruth has video.”

Patricia grabbed Rebecca’s arm.

“Don’t answer that.”

But Lily had heard enough.

Her little voice broke through the room.

“Mom said if Daddy found out, he would send me away.”

Rebecca snapped her head toward her.

“Lily.”

The child began to cry.

“And she said I reminded her of the other girl.”

The room went silent.

Nathan stared at his wife.

“What other girl?”

Rebecca stepped back.

“She’s confused.”

Patricia whispered, too sharply, “Be quiet.”

Nathan heard it.

His blood ran cold.

“Lily,” he asked gently, “did you hear a name?”

Lily nodded, tears sliding down her cheeks.

“I heard Mom say Grace.”

Rebecca looked as if someone had opened a locked door in the middle of the hospital.

The Blue Folder

Dana asked Rebecca and Patricia to leave the room.

Rebecca protested. Patricia threatened to call an attorney. But when hospital security came to the doorway, both women finally stepped out.

Nathan sat beside Lily until she fell asleep.

Then he called his younger sister, Claire.

“I need your help,” he said. “Go to the house with Mrs. Ruth. Do not go alone. Record everything. Look in Rebecca’s closet for a blue folder.”

Claire did not waste time asking questions.

Near dawn, Nathan’s phone buzzed again.

“The folder is here.”

Then came the photos.

Old documents. A handwritten letter. Adoption papers. A birth certificate dated sixteen years earlier.

A baby girl named Grace.

Rebecca had given birth long before she met Nathan. She had signed away her rights when she was eighteen. Patricia’s name appeared on several documents as the person who arranged everything.

Nathan sat in the hospital hallway and stared at the screen.

Nine years of marriage.

Nine years of birthdays, dinners, holidays, family photos.

And Rebecca had erased an entire child from her life.

Not forgotten.

Erased.

The Truth Rebecca Could Not Hide

By morning, Nathan’s attorney, Miles Garron, arrived at the hospital.

He reviewed the medical report, Mrs. Ruth’s video, Lily’s statement, and the documents from the blue folder.

His expression was grave.

“We can request temporary custody and supervised contact,” Miles said. “The evidence is strong. Lily should not be alone with Rebecca right now.”

Nathan looked at his sleeping daughter.

“I don’t want revenge.”

Miles closed the folder.

“This is not revenge. This is protection.”

Later that morning, Rebecca returned wearing a white blouse and careful makeup. Patricia stood behind her like a wall.

Rebecca’s voice was softer now.
