My Daughter Was Found Unconscious Beside Her School Backpack Days Before Her 16th Birthday—The Door Wasn’t Forced, Nothing Was Stolen, and Someone Had Entered the Correct Alarm Code… Then My Ex-Wife’s Fiancé Walked Into the Hospital, Looked Me in the Eye, and Said Six Words That Made the Detective Slowly Close His Notebook

Part 2 of 3

“Yeah.”

She tried to move.

I put my hand beside hers instead of touching her.

“Don’t. Doctor says you need to rest.”

Her fingers closed around two of mine.

Harper was asleep on the small couch near the window.

Violet looked toward her.

Then toward the door.

“Is Daniel here?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Her grip tightened.

“Dad. Is he here?”

“He was.”

Violet’s breathing changed.

I reached for the nurse call button.

“No.”

“Violet—”

“He gave them the code.”

I stopped.

Harper sat up.

“What?”

Violet looked at her mother.

“Daniel gave them the code.”

Harper stood so quickly her blanket fell to the floor.

“Who?”

Violet closed her eyes.

I pressed the call button.

“We’re getting Detective Mills.”

She shook her head.

“Two guys.”

“You don’t have to tell me now.”

“They wanted your black case.”

That got my attention.

I had a black document case in the locked cabinet of my home office.

It contained copies of records I had collected during contract work after leaving active service.

Invoices.

Equipment serial numbers.

Purchase orders.

Most of it involved a private security company called Northstar Strategic Services.

I had been asked to review some procurement records months earlier.

What I found didn’t match.

Equipment listed as new had serial numbers belonging to previously reported inventory.

Invoices had been duplicated.

Money was moving through a subcontractor that should not have been billing Northstar at all.

I had turned the material over to federal investigators months earlier.

The papers in my house were copies.

Very few people knew I had ever worked on the matter.

Daniel was one of them.

He worked in operations for one of Northstar’s subcontractors.

At a barbecue that spring, he had asked me about it.

Casually.

“You still doing that consulting thing with Northstar?”

I had told him I couldn’t discuss it.

He had smiled.

“Come on. I’m practically family.”

I had changed the subject.

Now my daughter was lying in a hospital bed asking about my black case.

Mills arrived less than fifteen minutes later.

Violet told him what she remembered.

Two men.

One taller.

One younger.

They entered without forcing the door.

She had been upstairs.

She heard one of them say:

“Mercer said the girl gets home around three-thirty.”

Then:

“He gave you the right code, didn’t he?”

Violet had tried to leave through the back.

One of them saw her.

After that, her memory broke into pieces.

A hand grabbing her sweatshirt.

Someone yelling.

The backpack falling.

One man telling the other they were only supposed to find the case.

Then nothing.

Mills closed his notebook.

“Violet, you did good.”

She looked at me.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“They knew you weren’t coming home until Friday.”

I looked toward the empty doorway.

Daniel knew that too.

He Left the Hospital

Mills told an officer to locate Daniel.

Harper called him.

No answer.

Called again.

Straight to voicemail.

“He was here last night,” she said.

Mills nodded.

“Do you know where he is now?”

“No.”

Harper looked at me.

Her face had gone pale.

“Ethan, I gave him that code.”

I didn’t answer.

She sat down.

“I gave it to him.”

Violet was watching her mother.

I pulled the curtain partly closed around the bed.

“Harper, this isn’t the time.”

“I let him into your house.”

“You gave your fiancé a security code. You didn’t tell him to send anyone there.”

She looked toward Violet.

Then covered her face.

Mills’ phone rang.

He stepped into the hall.

Less than a minute later, he came back.

“Ethan, is there another way into your home office?”

“No.”

“Window?”

“Ground floor. Why?”

“Your neighbor called in a vehicle parked behind your house.”

I stood.

“Daniel?”

Mills was already moving.

“Stay here.”

That was difficult.

But I did.

About forty minutes later, Mills called me.

Daniel Mercer had been arrested inside my home office.

He had opened the cabinet.

The black case was on my desk.

Beside it was a canvas bag containing cash, gloves and two prepaid phones.

Police also found something in Daniel’s jacket pocket.

Violet’s necklace.

A small silver pendant I had bought for her birthday.

It had disappeared from my bedroom drawer during the break-in.

I sat beside Violet’s hospital bed with the phone against my ear.

“You’re sure?”

“We photographed everything where we found it.”

“Don’t move those phones through five different hands.”

Mills was quiet for a second.

“I know my job, Ethan.”

I looked at Violet.

“I know.”

Then I said the only thing I cared about.

“Preserve everything.”

“We will.”

“Messages. Locations. Cameras. All of it.”

“We will.”

I hung up.

Violet was awake.

“Was it him?”

I pulled my chair closer.

“Police found him at the house.”

Her eyes filled.

I expected her to ask why.

Instead she asked:

“Did he get your case?”

I looked at her bruised face.

“Violet, listen to me. That case doesn’t matter.”

“But they did this because—”

“No.”

I waited until she looked at me.

“They did this because they chose to. Not because of you. Not because of a case.”

She nodded once.

Then she held out her hand.

I took it.

That was the first time since I had walked through the front door that I felt the balance change.

Daniel was no longer standing in a hospital hallway pretending to be concerned.

He was sitting in police custody.

And now there were two phones that could tell us why.

The Name Violet Remembered

The phones answered most of it.

Daniel had been careful enough not to use his regular number.

He had not been careful enough to erase everything.

There were messages giving Violet’s school schedule.

My return date.

The alarm code.

Directions to my office.
