“Sometimes you have to remove your mistakes before you can make room for something better.”
Paige laughed along with everyone else.
My chair moved sharply as I stood.
I had no plan. I only knew I would not remain seated while Grant turned years of shared life into a joke.
Before I could step away, Wesley touched my wrist.
“Mom, please wait.”
His voice was quiet but steady.
Then he stood and lifted the wrapped box from beneath his chair.
Wesley Walked Toward the Microphone
The room gradually became quiet as Wesley crossed the dance floor.
Grant watched him approach with an amused expression.
“Well, it looks like my son wants to say a few words.”
Wesley stopped in front of him.
“Can I have the microphone?”
Grant handed it over, still smiling.
Wesley held the microphone with both hands.
For a few seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked at his father.
“You said Mom was a mistake.”
The room became completely silent.
Grant’s smile tightened.
“I was making a joke, buddy.”
“It wasn’t funny.”
A few guests shifted in their seats.
Wesley placed the wrapped box on a nearby table.
“I brought you a wedding present.”
Grant gave a nervous laugh.
“All right. Let’s see it.”
He pulled away the paper and opened the lid.
The moment he saw what was inside, a sharp cry escaped him.
The lid slipped from his fingers and landed on the floor.
Paige rose from her chair.
“Grant, what is it?”
Inside the box were dozens of printed photographs.
The first showed Grant and Paige together in a parking garage.
The date had been printed beneath the image.
It was taken five months before Grant left our home.
The second showed them entering a restaurant together on a night Grant had told me he was attending a late business meeting.
More photographs followed.
Different dates. Different locations. The same hidden relationship.
The Account Grant Forgot
Grant stared at Wesley as if he no longer recognized his own child.
“Where did you find these?”
Wesley lifted the microphone again.
“Your old account was still open on the computer.”
Paige picked up the first photograph.
Her smile disappeared.
“This was before you told me you had separated.”
Grant looked around the room.
“There is context you do not understand.”
Paige examined another image.
“You said you had already moved out.”
Grant said nothing.
That silence changed the atmosphere instantly.
Wesley’s voice trembled, but he continued.
“You told me you never lied to me.”
Grant stepped toward him.
“Wesley, this is not something a child should be involved in.”
“I became involved when you stopped coming home.”
The words were simple, but they landed heavily.
I walked toward my son and stood beside him.
I placed one hand on his shoulder, hoping he would know he was not alone.
Grant looked at me.
“You put him up to this.”
Before I could answer, Wesley spoke.
“Mom didn’t know.”
He reached into the box and removed a small flash drive.
“There are messages too.”
The Truth Hidden in Draft Folders
Paige took the flash drive and handed it to her brother, who quickly connected it to a laptop used for the wedding presentation.
Grant tried to stop him.
“This is private information.”
Paige turned toward him.
“Then explain it before we open anything.”
Grant had no explanation.
Several folders appeared on the screen.
They contained saved messages, email drafts, financial notes, and different versions of the same story.
In messages to Paige, Grant described me as controlling and unpredictable.
In messages to his friends, he claimed I had ended the marriage.
In emails intended for his attorney, he created timelines that made him appear innocent and responsible.
The dates proved that he had been preparing these stories while he still lived with Wesley and me.
Paige read several pages in silence.
Then she looked at him.
“You did not leave a broken marriage and meet me afterward.”
Grant lowered his voice.
“Paige, we can discuss this privately.”
“You built our entire relationship around a story you designed.”
Her father stepped closer to the table.
“Did you also provide false financial information during your divorce?”
Grant’s expression changed.
That was the moment I understood the files contained more than proof of a hidden relationship.
The Wedding Came to an End
Grant tried to regain control of the room.
