Part 2 of 3

“You always have a big lunch when there’s not enough dinner.”

I had to look away.

Losing my job had been painful.

Watching my marriage collapse had been humiliating.

But nothing compared with realizing my nine-year-old son had learned to notice when I skipped meals.

Meanwhile, Corbin had moved into a large house with his girlfriend.

He drove a luxury SUV.

He traveled.

Then he filed for primary custody of Tobin.

He Created the Instability—Then Blamed Me for It

Corbin’s filing described my home as financially unstable and inappropriate for a child.

I read the sentence three times.

He had helped create that instability.

Now he intended to use it against me.

My attorney, Mallory Keene, was a calm woman in her early forties who rarely wasted words.

When I showed her the filing, she sighed.

“He’s going after your finances.”

“But he knows why I’m struggling.”

“Knowing and admitting are two different things.”

“Then we’ll show the court what happened.”

Mallory looked at the files covering her desk.

“That’s what we’re working toward. But we need evidence, not just a timeline.”

Corbin had resources I did not.

He had private attorneys, consultants, and investigators.

I had Mallory, a heavily discounted legal arrangement, and several boxes of documents.

Then I realized someone had begun photographing us.

The same dark SUV appeared near Tobin’s school more than once.

A man with a camera stood near our apartment complex.

Mallory believed Corbin had hired an investigator.

“Don’t confront anyone,” she told me. “Write down dates and times.”

So I did.

I assumed they were looking for something dramatic.

I was wrong.

They were looking for anything they could make look bad.

The Photograph That Was Supposed to Ruin Me

One Saturday, Tobin and I volunteered at a community garden on the edge of town.

The garden provided fresh vegetables to two neighborhood food programs.

Tobin loved going because children were allowed to paint plant markers and help water the seedlings.

That morning, I told him to wear clothes he didn’t mind getting dirty.

He chose an old charcoal T-shirt.

By the afternoon, the shirt was covered in soil and grass stains.

On the drive home, we stopped at a discount grocery store.

Apparently, someone photographed us walking through the parking lot.

Six weeks later, that photograph appeared in court.

Corbin’s attorney held it up as though it were proof of something terrible.

“This picture was taken shortly before six o’clock in the evening,” she said. “Would you agree that your son’s clothing is visibly dirty?”

“Yes, because we had spent the afternoon volunteering at a garden.”

She gave me a small smile.

“That’s your explanation.”

“That’s what happened.”

She turned toward the judge.

“Regardless, this photograph is consistent with the larger concern. Ms. Prescott is unemployed, heavily in debt, living in a small apartment, and clearly struggling to provide the stability this child deserves.”

Each statement contained a piece of truth.

Together, they sounded like a different life.

Then she looked at the photograph again.

“She cannot even provide consistently clean clothing.”

That was when Tobin spoke.

My Son Refused to Stay Silent

Tobin had come to court because a court-appointed professional was scheduled to meet with him privately after the hearing.

He was sitting behind me with my cousin.

Suddenly, I heard him say:

“That’s not true.”

Every head turned.

“Tobin,” I whispered.

He stood anyway.

His cheeks were bright red, but his eyes were fixed on Corbin.

“Dad knows why my shirt looked like that.”

Corbin’s expression hardened.

“Sit down, Tobin.”

My son didn’t move.

“Tell them.”

The judge raised one hand before anyone else could speak.

“Young man, please stay beside your family member.”

But Tobin reached under the collar of his gray shirt and showed that he had been wearing another shirt underneath it that day.

It was a white volunteer shirt covered with colorful signatures and tiny drawings made by the garden volunteers.

“We wore old shirts over these because we were planting vegetables,” Tobin explained. “Everybody got dirty.”

The judge leaned forward.

That alone was enough to destroy the photograph’s meaning.

But Tobin wasn’t finished.

He reached into the small folder he had brought with him and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

“I found something at Dad’s house.”

Corbin’s face changed instantly.

One Piece of Paper Changed Everything

The bailiff carried the paper to the judge.

Corbin whispered rapidly to his attorney.

The judge read the page, then looked at Tobin.

“Where did you find this?”

“Dad printed it in his office.”

Corbin’s attorney immediately stood.

“Your Honor, we don’t know where this document came from or whether it’s authentic.”

The judge nodded.

“That will be determined later. Right now, I want to understand how the child obtained it.”

Tobin swallowed.

“Dad was talking on the phone. He said they needed pictures that made Mom look poor.”

I felt my hands go cold.

Corbin stared at the table.

“He said the picture with my dirty shirt was really good for court.”

Then Tobin explained that Corbin had printed several emails. Later, Tobin had seen one discarded beside the office trash can and picked it up.

The email appeared to be between Corbin and the investigator.

One sentence immediately stood out:

“Prioritize anything that visually suggests instability—worn clothing, discount purchases, apartment conditions.”
