My Husband Bought Diamonds with the Woman Who Said I Would Never Leave—So I Took Our Nine-Year-Old Son and Left One Amber Envelope Beneath the Chandelier. But When He Opened It, the Photograph Inside Began Uncovering a Secret My Father Had Hidden About Me for Thirty-Seven Years.

Part 3 of 3

“What does any of this have to do with Juniper Ridge?”

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“If you know that name, we have very little time.”

Years earlier, Judith had discovered that her husband, Franklin, was moving family assets through Juniper Ridge. Rebecca’s mother helped her copy financial records, but before Judith could present them to an attorney, she vanished after a serious highway accident. Everyone was told she had not survived.

Last year, Grant found the pendant among Franklin’s possessions. Hidden beneath it was a safe-deposit key and the name of Rebecca’s mother.

Rebecca admitted that she and Grant had begun an inappropriate relationship while searching for the records. She offered no excuse.

“I heard your message,” I told her. “I heard you say I had no money, no career, and nowhere to go.”

Her eyes lowered.

“I was cruel. I wanted him to stop delaying decisions, and I said something I knew would wound you.”

“Grant agreed with you.”

“When he called you safe, he meant protected from the people behind Juniper Ridge.”

I stood so quickly that my knee struck the table.

“Control is not protection.”

“With Grant, it may have become both. That doesn’t make either one acceptable.”

Rebecca said the safe-deposit box had contained only a payment list and an old photograph. Wade wanted both, but Grant refused to surrender them.

Before she could explain further, Grant called.

“Rebecca is with you,” he said as soon as I answered.

“How could you know that?”

“Wade called me. Natalie, you need to leave Marion’s house.”

Marion switched the phone to speaker.

“We can contact the federal office,” she said.

“Do not call Owen Caldwell,” Grant replied.

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know Owen?”

“Because he contacted me before he ever met with you. He asked for the ownership documents to Crescent Harbor Trust.”

A soft sound came from the staircase. Eli stood there holding his stuffed dog.

“Dad?”

Grant’s voice softened instantly.

“Go with Uncle Paul, buddy. Please.”

The doorbell rang again.

The security camera showed Owen Caldwell standing on the porch beneath a black umbrella, holding his identification toward the lens.

“Mrs. Holloway,” he called. “We received information concerning your safety. Everyone inside needs to come with me.”

Grant’s response came sharply through the phone.

“Do not open that door.”

The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Marion drew the curtains while Paul guided Eli toward the rear exit.

“There’s a blue station wagon in the alley,” Grant said. “The keys are inside.”

“Who put it there?”

His answer arrived so quietly that I thought I had misunderstood him.

“My mother.”

Rebecca stared at the phone.

“Grant, your mother has been gone for twenty-seven years.”

“That is what my father wanted everyone to believe.”

Grant explained that Judith had survived the accident and disappeared after Franklin warned that their son would suffer the consequences if she exposed the financial network. She had spent the years since then gathering records from a distance. My father had known she was alive and had forced Grant to promise that he would protect her identity.

“Why didn’t you trust me?” I asked.

“Because I kept telling myself secrecy would keep you and Eli safe.”

“You betrayed our marriage, hid company transactions, and decided what I was allowed to know. That isn’t safety.”

“You’re right.”

It was the first time he had accepted my words without turning them into an argument.

Rebecca reached inside her coat and removed a folded photograph.

“There may be another option,” she said. “I took this from the safe-deposit box before Grant saw it.”

The picture showed four adults beside a lake nearly four decades earlier. Franklin Holloway stood beside Wade’s father. My own father smiled toward someone beyond the edge of the frame. Judith stood beside them holding a baby.

The date beneath the image was two years before Grant was born.

On the back, in my father’s handwriting, was a brief warning:

Natalie must never be told whose child this is.

I studied the infant’s face. Beneath the baby’s left ear was a pale crescent-shaped mark.

My hand rose slowly to the identical mark hidden beneath my hair.

Outside, Owen Caldwell knocked again, harder this time.

Through the phone, Grant took an unsteady breath.

“Natalie, there is something Samuel never told you about your place in this family.”
