Part 2 of 3

A few minutes later, the property manager arrived with authorization from the holding company, and we were allowed inside.

Hannah took Noah to a quiet sitting room, where a trusted household employee agreed to help keep him occupied, while I walked toward the dining room.

I heard Elaine’s voice before I saw her.

“The funniest part is that Caroline still thinks Daniel’s working himself to exhaustion. She’s probably washing somebody’s bedsheets right now.”

Several people laughed.

Lauren replied, “Well, somebody has to keep her busy while we enjoy the house.”

Then Daniel spoke.

“As long as she thinks I’m broke, she won’t ask questions.”

For a moment, I could hardly breathe.

I had spent countless evenings worrying about whether Daniel was eating properly, while he had apparently been sitting beneath chandeliers, making jokes about the woman raising his child.

I stepped into the doorway.

“I’m glad everyone’s having such a wonderful evening,” I said. “Maybe somebody can explain why you’re celebrating in my grandfather’s house.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Elaine stood abruptly, but Lauren moved closer to him and folded her arms.

“Daniel lives here with me,” she announced. “Whatever you had with him is over.”

“We’re still married,” I replied.

Daniel straightened his jacket, trying to regain his composure.

“Caroline, you’re embarrassing yourself. You don’t understand how these business arrangements work.”

He opened a leather briefcase and placed several documents on the table, pointing to a signature near the bottom of the final page.

According to the papers, I had granted him authority to manage certain property rights and financial interests connected with our family.

The signature looked remarkably like mine.

But I had never signed anything.

Daniel leaned closer, lowering his voice so only I could hear.

“Good luck proving that.”

Part Three: The Signature That Changed Everything

I studied the document carefully, noticing how closely the handwriting resembled mine, right down to the unusual flourish I added to the last letter of my surname.

Daniel mistook my silence for surrender.

“You should’ve stayed home,” he said. “Sign the remaining paperwork, and we can handle this privately.”

Elaine laughed.

“She ought to be grateful you’ve been supporting her at all.”

I wanted to ask how anyone could describe our circumstances as support, but Meredith had warned me that an angry argument would accomplish less than a clear account of what Daniel believed he had authority to do.

So I asked him whether the document had been used to authorize the questionable transactions.

“Obviously,” he answered. “Your grandfather put me in charge because he knew I could handle things better than he could.”

“And this house?”

“I manage it. Without me, your family would have made some very expensive mistakes.”

A familiar voice came from behind us.

“Then perhaps you’d like to explain those mistakes to me.”

Grandpa Walter stood in the doorway beside Meredith and the property manager.

Daniel stepped backward, his confident expression disappearing as Grandpa approached the table.

Meredith opened a folder containing certified property records, the original occupancy agreement, and summaries of the financial transactions under review.

She explained that Daniel had never owned the house and had never been authorized to transfer it or represent it as his personal property.

More troubling, the company’s accountants had identified over $300,000 in questionable payments associated with businesses connected to him.

“These matters are being reviewed by the appropriate authorities,” Meredith said calmly. “And the document bearing Caroline’s signature has been submitted for independent examination.”

Daniel began protesting, but Grandpa interrupted.

“You told me my granddaughter didn’t want to see me,” he said, his voice trembling. “You sent photographs of strangers and let me believe my family was happy here.”

He looked directly at Daniel.

“I could have forgiven an honest business mistake. What I cannot understand is why you allowed Caroline and Noah to struggle while you enjoyed everything intended to help them.”

For the first time that evening, Daniel had no convincing answer.

Elaine, however, found her voice.

“Maybe if Caroline had been a better wife, my son wouldn’t have needed somebody else.”

I looked at her, remembering every holiday when she had told me Daniel worked too hard and I should be more appreciative.

“Was I also responsible for him refusing to send money when Noah needed medicine?”

She looked away.

“Daniel had responsibilities.”

“So did I,” I answered. “And I never forgot my son.”

Lauren suddenly approached, holding a glass of water.

“You don’t get to walk in here and ruin everything,” she snapped.

Before I could respond, she threw the water across the front of my dress.

The room fell silent.

Cold water soaked through the navy fabric, but what caught my attention wasn’t the humiliation.

It was the gold bracelet around Lauren’s wrist.

“Take that off,” I said quietly.

She frowned.

“Excuse me?”

“The bracelet. It belonged to my mother.”

Lauren looked at Daniel.

“He gave it to me.”

“My mother left it to me when I was eighteen. He took it from our belongings and told me it had been lost.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Lauren slowly unfastened the clasp.

“I didn’t know,” she murmured.

“You do now.”

She placed it on the table, and I picked it up with trembling fingers, remembering my mother’s hands fastening it around my wrist and telling me that dignity had nothing to do with how much money someone possessed.

Then I turned toward Daniel.
