His father.

The man Trevor insisted had abandoned him before he was old enough to remember.

They hadn’t spoken in years.

I’d met Frank only twice during our marriage.

Both meetings had ended with Trevor walking away before either conversation lasted ten minutes.

I stared at the number for several seconds.

Then I pressed Call.

Frank answered on the second ring.

“Katie?”

His voice sounded surprised.

I swallowed.

“I need help.”

There was no long explanation.

No awkward silence.

Only one question.

“What’s your address?”

I gave it to him.

“I’ll be there before lunch,” he said.

For the first time since Trevor’s SUV disappeared down our street, I felt like someone was actually coming home.

The front door opened just before noon on Saturday.

I heard Trevor’s suitcase wheels bump across the porch.

Then his familiar voice echoed through the house.

“Honey? Girls? Daddy’s home!”

His excitement disappeared almost immediately.

He stopped just inside the doorway.

Frank was standing in the living room with Emma asleep against his shoulder while gently patting Grace’s back with his free hand.

Trevor stared as though he’d walked into the wrong house.

His eyes moved from Frank…

…to me…

…then to the large poster hanging above the fireplace.

Blue construction paper.

Black marker.

Large block letters.

Below the title was a handwritten schedule.

12:15 a.m.

2:40 a.m.

5:10 a.m.

7:30 a.m.

Feedings.

Diaper changes.

Bottle sterilizing.

Laundry.

Burping.

Repeat.

Trevor blinked twice.

“Katie… what is this?”

I slowly pushed myself off the couch.

The incision pulled immediately.

Before I had taken two steps, Frank crossed the room and offered his arm.

He helped me sit back down before Trevor had moved an inch.

Frank finally looked at his son.

His voice remained calm.

“Your daughters probably won’t remember you missing their first five days.”

Trevor lowered his eyes.

Frank continued.

“Your wife will.”

The room stayed silent.

No one argued.

No one defended him.

I reached beside the couch and pulled out another surprise.

A medium-sized suitcase.

I rolled it across the floor until it stopped against Trevor’s shoes.

He frowned.

“What’s this?”

A luggage tag hung from the handle.

DAD ON DUTY

He slowly unzipped it.

Inside were neatly organized supplies.

Diapers sorted by size.

Formula containers.

Clean bottles.

Extra baby clothes.

Burp cloths.

Pacifiers.

Gas drops.

Thermometers.

A notebook filled with feeding times.

Another page listed medications.

Another listed pediatrician appointments.

On top sat a laminated card.

Congratulations. Your vacation starts now.

Trevor looked up.

I met his eyes.

“Everything you packed for the beach is waiting upstairs.”

I nodded toward the suitcase.

“Everything you actually needed is in there.”

He didn’t say much during lunch.

Frank quietly showed him where everything was stored.

Which formula each baby tolerated.

Which bottle Emma preferred.

How Grace always needed another minute to burp.

Trevor nodded repeatedly.

For once, he wasn’t trying to explain himself.

The First Night

Reality arrived shortly after midnight.

Emma woke first.

Trevor hurried into the nursery before I could stand.

Thirty seconds later Grace began crying too.

Then Emma cried louder because the bottle wasn’t ready.

I heard cabinet doors opening.

Then closing.

Then opening again.

“Katie?”

I stayed in bed.

Frank gently placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Let him.”

Trevor eventually found the bottle warmer.

Three minutes later—

“Where are the clean nipples?”

Frank answered without leaving the hallway.

“Top drawer.”

Another minute.

“The small ones?”

“Left side.”

The crying continued.

Eventually both babies were fed.

Then Emma spit up across Trevor’s shirt.

He stared at the milk running down his chest.

For a second I thought he might complain.

Instead he sighed.

Changed shirts.

Picked her up again.

At three-thirty Grace needed another diaper.

At four Emma refused to sleep unless someone held her.

At five both girls somehow woke together.

By sunrise Trevor looked as though he hadn’t slept in days.

He dropped into a kitchen chair holding a cup of coffee.

His hair pointed in every direction.

Dark circles had appeared beneath his eyes.

He looked at me.

“How long have you been doing this?”

I buttered toast one-handed.

“Since they were born.”

He looked down at his coffee.

He didn’t speak again for several minutes.

No One Applauded

The second day wasn’t easier.
