But What His Mistress Sent Me The Next Morning Revealed A Secret Far Bigger Than His Affair

Part 2 of 3

Trevor looked toward the doorway.

“It’s complicated.”

“It doesn’t sound complicated,” Walter replied.

I placed my glass on the table.

“I’m not asking anyone to choose sides. I invited you because I don’t want anyone hearing later that I suddenly walked away from a happy marriage without explanation.”

Trevor lowered his head.

“Meredith, please. We can fix this.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know whether we can. But tomorrow, I’m speaking with an attorney.”

Nobody tried to stop me.

The Woman Who Called the Next Morning

Trevor stayed at a hotel that night.

The following morning, I received a message from an unfamiliar number.

My name is Chelsea. I work with Trevor. I think we need to talk.

My stomach tightened.

I called her.

Chelsea sounded nervous and embarrassed.

“I’m sorry to contact you this way,” she began. “Trevor told me you were already separated.”

I closed my eyes.

“We weren’t separated. We were living together, raising our daughter, and planning our anniversary.”

There was a long silence.

“He told me he had filed for divorce in July,” she said.

I sat upright.

“What?”

“He showed me paperwork. He said you hadn’t been officially notified yet because he wanted to give you time after the baby.”

I struggled to understand what she was telling me.

“Chelsea, our daughter was only a few months old in July. He was sleeping beside me every night.”

She began crying quietly.

“I didn’t know. I thought he was being considerate.”

Then she said something that changed everything.

“I have a copy of the divorce petition. He emailed it to me. Would you like me to send it?”

Within minutes, the document appeared in my inbox.

There was Trevor’s full name.

There was mine.

And beneath the heading was an official case number from the Superior Court of Fulton County.

He hadn’t merely talked about leaving me.

He had already taken steps to do it.

The Secret Hidden in Our Savings

I forwarded the documents to Allison, who came over immediately.

While reviewing the email, she noticed a second attachment.

It was titled Property and Financial Information.

The document listed our house, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and joint savings.

At the bottom, Trevor had written a note.

Move savings into Paige’s trust before final settlement.

My heart began pounding.

I opened our banking app.

The password I had used for years no longer worked.

After several unsuccessful attempts, I called the bank.

Once the representative verified my identity, she confirmed that our joint savings account had a balance of only $612.

I stared at the wall.

Six weeks earlier, we had more than $20,000.

“Are you telling me almost all our savings are gone?” I asked.

The representative explained that several transfers had been made from the joint account into another account over the previous weeks.

She couldn’t tell me what had happened after the money left our account, but she could help me obtain the transaction history.

When I ended the call, Allison was watching me.

“How much?”

“Almost everything.”

She reached for my hand.

“We’re finding you a lawyer today.”

I looked toward Paige, who was sleeping peacefully in her portable crib.

For the first time, I understood that Trevor’s dishonesty might affect more than our marriage.

It could affect our daughter’s financial security.

The Truth Behind the Trust Fund

That afternoon, Allison helped me contact a family-law attorney named Rebecca Sloan.

Rebecca listened carefully as I explained the phone call, anniversary dinner, divorce petition, and missing savings.

She reviewed the documents without interrupting.

Then she said something I hadn’t expected.

“Meredith, we need to separate what we know from what we suspect. Your husband may have established a legitimate trust for your daughter, but transferring marital funds without discussing it with you raises important questions.”

She checked the publicly available court record.

Trevor had filed for divorce in July.

However, he had never completed the required steps to formally notify me, and the case had recently been dismissed after he failed to move it forward.

“So he wasn’t actually divorced, and he hadn’t even told me he filed,” I said.

“That’s correct. But the filing itself is real.”

Rebecca then requested the complete trust agreement and financial records from Trevor.

She also advised me to document the transfers and discuss protective measures with the bank.

Trevor responded to her written request two days later.

The documents revealed that he had transferred $21,400 from our joint savings into a trust established for Paige.

Our daughter was the sole beneficiary.

But Trevor had named himself the only acting trustee.

That meant he controlled the trust’s administration and investment decisions, subject to the trust terms and his legal duties, while I had no immediate role in managing it.

When Rebecca explained this, I felt both relieved and furious.

The money hadn’t been given to Chelsea.

But Trevor had moved our shared savings into an arrangement he controlled without discussing it with me.

“He says he did it to protect Paige,” Rebecca explained.

I shook my head.

“Then why keep it secret from her mother?”

Rebecca didn’t try to answer for him.

Instead, she outlined our options for preserving the funds while we resolved the financial issues.

The Conversation He Could No Longer Avoid

A week later, Trevor and I met at Rebecca’s office.
