Part 2 of 3

The Letter That Changed Everything

We were preparing to leave when Graham’s communications director, a woman named Meredith Shaw, entered the room carrying an envelope.

She appeared deeply uncomfortable, particularly when Graham mentioned that I had repeatedly tried to contact him during our separation.

After several hesitant explanations, she admitted that Graham’s former executive assistant, Patricia Ellison, had recently sent her a letter concerning events from eleven years earlier.

Graham opened it immediately.

As he read, his expression changed, and when he handed the pages to me, I discovered an account of my past that made my hands tremble.

Patricia confessed that Graham’s mother, Evelyn Whitaker, had instructed her to prevent me from reaching him after our separation, claiming that I had been unfaithful and that any attempt to reconcile would interfere with his future.

The letter described the afternoon I had arrived at his office carrying my pregnancy records, only to be told that he was unavailable.

According to Patricia, Graham had actually been working upstairs.

She had also received photographs of the twins shortly after their birth, along with correspondence identifying him as their father, but had concealed everything because she feared losing her position.

At the bottom of the envelope were two small photographs, their edges slightly worn.

Benjamin was wrapped in a white hospital blanket, his tiny forehead creased in concentration, while Lucy slept peacefully with one hand resting against her cheek.

Graham held the photographs for a long time.

“My mother knew?” he asked quietly.

Meredith nodded.

“According to Patricia, yes.”

I felt an unfamiliar mixture of anger and sadness, because although the letter explained why my messages had never reached Graham, it did not erase the way he had treated me before I left.

“Your mother may have kept us apart,” I told him, “but you still chose to believe the worst about me without listening.”

He lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.”

There was no argument, no attempt to defend himself, and somehow that made the conversation more difficult.

Lucy, who had been studying the photographs, finally asked whether Graham might come to our house for dinner.

I almost refused, concerned that allowing him into our home so quickly might encourage expectations he was not prepared to fulfill, but when I looked at my daughter, I realized she was asking for something modest.

Not a new life.

Not an immediate family.

Simply dinner.

“Tomorrow at six,” I said. “No cameras, no assistants, and no expensive presents.”

Graham nodded.

“I’ll be there.”

A Dinner Ten Years Late

The following evening, Graham arrived wearing a charcoal sweater and carrying a paper bag containing two ordinary notebooks, one filled with graph paper for Benjamin and the other with watercolor pages for Lucy.

Our house was modest compared with the enormous properties he owned, but it was warm and comfortable, with children’s drawings on the refrigerator, books scattered across the coffee table, and family photographs covering the hallway wall.

Graham stopped in front of those photographs almost immediately.

He studied Benjamin’s kindergarten graduation, Lucy’s first dance recital, their seventh birthday celebration, and a picture of both children standing beside a crooked snowman in our backyard.

“You took all these?” he asked.

“Most of them.”

He pointed toward a photograph showing the twins carrying enormous backpacks on their first day of school.

“Were you there alone?”

“My sister came afterward, but yes, I took them to school.”

He remained silent, and I understood that the photographs were telling him something no legal document could adequately explain.

Ten years could not be recovered by writing a check.

Dinner began awkwardly, although Lucy soon rescued the conversation by asking whether Graham liked vegetable soup, while Benjamin wanted to know whether he had ever built anything with his own hands.

By dessert, the children were showing him a small robot they had assembled from a school science kit, and when Graham suggested adjusting one of its sensors, Benjamin became interested enough to forget his earlier nervousness.

I watched them sitting together on the living room carpet, three people sharing the same concentration and similar expressions, and felt something inside me soften despite my determination to remain cautious.

Then my phone rang.

Andrew had located the original divorce documents, and what he discovered raised questions neither of us had anticipated.

The agreement I had signed stated that there were no children and no pregnancy, while the version submitted to the court contained an additional provision acknowledging my pregnancy and outlining Graham’s future financial responsibilities.

Both versions carried signatures attributed to me.

“I only signed one agreement,” I whispered.

“I believe you,” Andrew replied. “We’re having the documents examined, but there’s something else. Graham’s mother authorized a payment to a private investigator immediately after the separation.”

I leaned against the hallway wall.

“Who was the investigator?”

“A man named Peter Lawson.”

I knew that name.

Peter had once been Graham’s closest business associate, and his messages offering to help me find employment had become the very reason Graham accused me of having another relationship.

Suddenly, the past seemed far less accidental than I had believed.

The Man Who Finally Told the Truth

Two days later, Andrew arranged a meeting with Peter, who had moved to Pittsburgh and now operated a small consulting business.

He arrived carrying an old leather folder and looked genuinely uncomfortable when he saw me.

“Natalie, I should have contacted you years ago,” he said.

I offered him a chair but did not pretend to welcome him.

“Then perhaps you can explain why you didn’t.”

Peter told us that Evelyn had hired him to locate me after Graham ordered me out, claiming that I had taken confidential company information and that Graham needed to understand where I had gone.

Although Peter quickly discovered that I was pregnant and living alone, he continued accepting Evelyn’s payments because his own finances were uncertain.

More troubling still, Evelyn had provided Graham with a letter supposedly written by me, claiming that I loved Peter and wanted to end my marriage.

When Peter placed a photocopy on the table, I recognized the imitation of my handwriting immediately.

“I never wrote this.”

“I know,” he answered.

“And you let him believe it?”

Peter looked down.
