My Husband Threw Me Into the Snow With Our 11-Day-Old Twins, Certain I Would Leave With Nothing—But After One Call Took Away the Fortune His Family Thought Was Theirs, I Found a Secret Clinic File Explaining Why They Had Wanted Both Babies Born…

Part 2 of 3

“Lillian, I don’t have your baby,” he said quickly. “The child in the picture isn’t either of the twins. They staged it.”

“Then tell me where my son is.”

“Go to the old Marlowe estate. Look beneath the family chapel. Your father left something there.”

A second voice sounded behind him, and the call ended.

My father had been gone for eighteen years.

Or at least that was what everyone had told me.

Beneath the Chapel

The Marlowe estate stood ninety miles north, abandoned among bare winter trees. I left my remaining son with the medical team and traveled there with Everett Kane, my head of security, while state investigators searched for the vehicle seen leaving my building.

Behind the chapel altar, we found a concealed lever inside the hands of a marble angel. The mechanism opened a stairway leading to an underground medical facility that still had electricity, fresh supplies, and equipment humming behind glass doors.

In the final room lay an older man with silver hair and a familiar scar near his temple.

My father opened his eyes when I approached.

“Lillian,” he whispered.

I had spent eighteen years mourning him, yet there he was, frail but aware, his fingers closing weakly around mine.

“Why did everyone tell me you were gone?”

“Because Adrian Voss needed you to believe it.”

Adrian was Marlowe Group’s senior legal adviser, the patient man who had taught me to read contracts, negotiate acquisitions, and trust no promise that had not been placed in writing. He had been almost a second father to me.

My real father explained that the Lantern Program had begun decades earlier as voluntary medical research established by my mother, Rosalind. She wanted to connect people with rare compatibility markers to patients who needed help. Adrian had transformed that registry into a private network serving wealthy families, treating children not as people but as future medical resources.

When my father attempted to close the program, Adrian arranged his disappearance. Constance later found him and hid him beneath the chapel—not from kindness, but because she needed his research for her daughter, Corinne, who carried the same rare marker.

Before I could absorb another betrayal, Constance entered the room. There was no jewelry at her throat now, and none of her former triumph remained.

“I helped remove your baby before Adrian’s team reached him,” she said.

“Where is he?”

“With Reid. They’re coming through the service tunnel.”

Minutes later, an old medical vehicle entered the underground garage. Reid sat inside with my missing son wrapped safely in his coat.

I took the baby from him without a word and checked his face, his hands, and his breathing. He was warm and unharmed.

Then I looked at my husband.

“You knew my treatment had been altered.”

“I knew one embryo carried the marker,” he admitted. “Mother said Corinne might someday need a simple donation. I chose to believe her because the truth would have cost me everything.”

“And sending us into the cold?”

His eyes lowered.

“Adrian ordered me to force you into activating the corporate emergency protocol. It gave him temporary control of your company.”

The call I had made from the car had not merely frozen Callahan assets. It had placed Adrian in charge during the investigation.

He had anticipated every move.

Almost every move.

The Clause He Overlooked

My father had created a second safeguard known only to him and my mother. It required authorization from both a Marlowe heir and the company’s original founder.

We returned to headquarters through a maintenance entrance while Adrian publicly claimed I was emotionally unfit to lead the corporation. By sunrise, reporters surrounded the building, repeating his carefully prepared account of an exhausted new mother who had vanished with two infants.

In a control room beneath the parking garage, my father and I placed our hands on separate scanners.

The system awakened.

Adrian’s access vanished. Board members received protected copies of Lantern’s financial and medical records, while every false contract and hidden transfer was preserved beyond his reach.

His face appeared on the screen.

“You were always a bright student,” he said calmly.

“You mistook my trust for obedience.”

Adrian responded by releasing a video from Northstar. It showed two embryos being prepared during my final procedure. One belonged to Reid and me. The other had been created years earlier from Corinne’s preserved genetic material.

The boys were not twins by ancestry.

One was my biological son. The other was Corinne’s son, which made him Constance’s grandson. Both, however, had grown within me, entered the world together, and slept each night with their small hands touching.
