I Quietly Called My Lawyer. But When He Returned With His Girlfriend, His Door Code Failed—and the Documents Waiting for Him Revealed Something He Never Expected…

Part 2 of 3

Derek apparently believed he would receive a substantial settlement from me and use it to cover everything.

But the reality was considerably different.

I had founded my company before our marriage. The Myers Park property was held by a separate LLC controlled through my business interests, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS, worth approximately $110,000, belonged to the corporate vehicle fleet.

Those arrangements didn’t mean every financial question was automatically settled. North Carolina divorce law required careful consideration of marital assets, debts, and any potential claims involving the growth of a business during marriage.

Evelyn handled those issues through the proper legal process.

The house presented another complication.

Derek had lived there as my husband, so we couldn’t simply change the locks overnight.

Our attorneys arranged a written agreement governing temporary occupancy and the collection of his belongings.

Derek signed it after being assured that signing did not waive any legitimate claim he might pursue in the divorce.

He moved his personal belongings out on Thursday evening.

But he still believed he could return with Brianna and take possession.

On Friday morning, he sent me a message.

Eleven o’clock. I’m bringing Brianna to our house. Have the keys ready.

I forwarded it to Evelyn.

Her reply was brief.

I’ll have someone there.

The Friday Everything Changed

At eleven the next morning, Derek arrived outside the Myers Park property with Brianna.

I wasn’t there.

I was sitting in my office, where our authorized security system allowed me to see the front entrance.

Derek stepped out of a rented SUV, wearing an expensive jacket and the watch I had given him for our third anniversary.

Brianna followed, one hand resting on her pregnant stomach.

“Welcome home,” Derek announced proudly.

She smiled at the mansion.

“It’s even prettier than the pictures.”

He walked to the entrance and entered his old security code.

The panel flashed red.

He tried again.

Nothing happened.

A representative from the property management company approached with a copy of the occupancy agreement and contact information for Evelyn’s office.

“Mr. Whitmore, your agreed period of occupancy has ended. The property owner has not authorized a new move-in.”

Derek’s face changed.

“I’m the owner.”

“The ownership records don’t identify you as the owner, sir. Any remaining dispute needs to go through your attorney.”

Brianna looked confused.

“Derek, what is he talking about?”

Derek called me.

“Claire, why isn’t my code working?”

“Because you moved out yesterday, Derek. You signed the agreement.”

“I told you Brianna and I were coming!”

“And I told you the house wasn’t yours to give away.”

He lowered his voice.

“You can’t leave me with nothing.”

“I haven’t taken anything from you. Our attorneys are sorting out what belongs to each of us.”

I ended the call.

A few minutes later, Brianna asked him a question loud enough for the security camera to capture.

“If this isn’t your house, what else have you lied about?”

He didn’t answer.

The Truth Brianna Never Expected

Later that afternoon, Derek took Brianna to another residential property associated with my company.

He apparently believed his former corporate access card would still work.

It didn’t.

The building manager explained that Derek wasn’t authorized to use the employee accommodations.

Brianna demanded an explanation.

“You told me you owned this company.”

“It’s complicated,” Derek replied.

“What’s complicated? You said you were the CEO.”

The manager directed them to our corporate office for any further questions.

By evening, Brianna had discovered the truth through publicly available business records and Derek’s own reluctant admissions.

Her wealthy technology entrepreneur was actually an administrative manager earning $52,000 annually.

The mansion wasn’t his.

The luxury SUV wasn’t his.

And the company he claimed to have built belonged to the wife he had just abandoned.

Patricia called me that night.

Her voice was shaking.

“Claire, please. We borrowed money for the wedding. The venue won’t return everything.”

“Why would you book a wedding before Derek was divorced?”

She began crying.

“We thought he would receive money from the settlement.”

I closed my eyes.

“You were planning to celebrate his marriage to another woman using money you expected him to take from me.”

“I never wanted things to happen this way.”

“Then you should have told me the truth.”

For the first time in five years, I ended a conversation with Patricia without trying to make her feel better.

The Confession That Changed Everything

Two weeks later, Brianna requested a meeting.

I agreed, provided Evelyn was present.

She arrived at my attorney’s office wearing a simple maternity dress, without the expensive jewelry she had displayed in photographs.

“I know you probably hate me,” she began.

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you,” I answered. “But you knew Derek was married.”

She nodded.

“Patricia told me you two were practically separated. She said you treated Derek like an employee instead of a husband.”

I looked down at my hands.

“I supported him because I loved him. I never asked him to earn what I earned.”

Brianna wiped her eyes.

Then she told us something unexpected.

Before meeting Derek, she had been in a long relationship with a man named Owen Fletcher.

Their relationship hadn’t completely ended when she started seeing Derek.

And there was something she had concealed from him.

“I’m not certain Derek is the baby’s father.”

Evelyn put down her pen.

“Does Derek know there’s a question about paternity?”

Brianna shook her head.

“No. I was afraid he’d leave. His mother kept talking about the mansion and how my baby would never have to worry about money.”
