Part 2 of 3

“What do you mean?”

“We’ll talk tomorrow, honey.”

The Papers My Husband Wanted Me to Sign

Grant arrived the next morning carrying a huge bouquet of white roses.

He wore a new suit and seemed unusually cheerful.

“There’s my beautiful wife and our little princess!”

He kissed my forehead and placed a folder on the bedside table.

“I took care of the insurance updates. Just sign these so we can get you home.”

I opened the folder.

The first few pages concerned insurance coverage.

But tucked behind them was a vehicle title assignment and a bill of sale.

My name appeared as the owner transferring the SUV.

Jocelyn’s name appeared as the buyer.

The amount listed was far below the vehicle’s actual value.

I looked at Grant.

“Why does adding Elodie to our insurance involve transferring my SUV to your sister?”

His smile vanished.

“That must have gotten mixed up with the other paperwork.”

I removed the documents and placed them inside my hospital bag.

“Then I’ll keep these until we figure out how that happened.”

Grant looked uncomfortable but said nothing.

A few minutes later, his phone rang.

It was someone from Human Resources at Piedmont Automotive Group, the dealership network where he worked as a sales manager.

He had been competing for a regional director position, and the final leadership meeting had been moved forward.

The company’s owner would attend personally.

Grant was delighted.

“This is it, Meredith. I think they’re finally giving me the promotion!”

He’d spent months talking about the company’s mysterious majority owner, who rarely attended staff meetings and left daily operations to his executive team.

Grant had never met him.

He didn’t even know his name.

My Husband Left Me Standing Outside the Hospital

When we reached the hospital entrance, I saw my SUV parked near the curb.

White ribbons covered the hood.

Beverly stood beside Jocelyn, taking photographs.

Grant walked straight toward them.

“Everything’s ready,” he announced.

I stopped.

“Ready for what?”

Jocelyn smiled.

“I’m taking my new SUV to the wedding venue. Doesn’t it look beautiful?”

I looked at Grant.

“Where’s Elodie’s car seat?”

He shrugged.

“Your dad can pick you up. Jocelyn needs the SUV today.”

For a moment, I thought I’d misheard him.

“You’re telling your wife, who just gave birth, to find another ride home because your sister wants my vehicle?”

Beverly sighed impatiently.

“Meredith, don’t make a scene. You’re going straight home anyway. Jocelyn has a wedding to organize.”

Grant folded his arms.

“I’ve already explained it. We’ll get you another car eventually.”

I looked at my sleeping daughter.

I had spent months preparing for her arrival, imagining the moment we would bring her home together.

Instead, her father was standing beside my vehicle, explaining why his sister deserved it more.

Then a familiar voice came from behind me.

“Grant, before you leave, there’s something we need to discuss.”

I turned.

My father was approaching in his faded jacket, carrying flowers for me and a gray folder under his arm.

The Man My Husband Mocked Was His Company’s Owner

Grant looked irritated.

“Russell, this really isn’t the best time.”

Dad stopped beside him.

“Actually, I think the timing is important.”

He opened the folder.

“A few weeks ago, you attended a management meeting where you made some comments about your father-in-law.”

Grant frowned.

Dad continued.

“You described me as a poor retired mechanic who spent his days keeping bees. You also said your wife would become easier to manage after having the baby.”

Grant’s expression changed.

“That was a private conversation.”

“It was recorded during a company meeting, and the recording was retained as part of an internal review.”

Beverly stepped forward.

“What does any of that have to do with my son?”

Dad looked directly at Grant.

“You’ve been hoping to meet the owner of Piedmont Automotive Group, haven’t you?”

Grant nodded uncertainly.

“Well, you already have. I’m Russell Langford, the majority owner through our parent company.”

My husband stared at him.

Dad had started with a small repair shop and a used tow truck more than thirty years earlier.

Over time, he built a network of dealerships, service centers, and commercial vehicle businesses across the Carolinas.

He rarely appeared at company events and had entrusted daily management to a professional executive team.

His private life was deliberately simple.

He drove an old pickup, raised bees on his property, and preferred working outdoors to attending formal dinners.

Grant knew my father had worked with cars.

He had simply never considered that the quiet man in the faded jacket might be successful.

“Mr. Langford, I had no idea,” Grant whispered.

Dad nodded.

“And that’s what concerns me. You would have treated me differently if you’d known I owned the company.”

The Folder That Ended His Celebration

Dad handed Grant several documents.

“Our compliance department has been reviewing irregularities involving dealership demonstration vehicles.”

Grant looked confused.

“What irregularities?”

“Your sister used company vehicles on several occasions without proper authorization. The records associated with those vehicles were inaccurate.”

Jocelyn stopped smiling.

Dad continued.

“The review began before I knew anything about what happened to Meredith’s SUV. Your promotion has been suspended while the company completes its investigation.”

Grant stared at the paperwork.

“Please, Russell. I can explain.”

“You’ll have that opportunity with Human Resources and the compliance team. They’ll follow the same process they would for any employee.”

Dad closed the folder.
