Part 2 of 3

“You don’t need to be embarrassed. I’m offering you a practical solution.”

I picked up the check.

Her shoulders relaxed.

Then I tore it in half.

She sat perfectly still as I tore the pieces once more and placed them beside her coffee cup.

“I didn’t start seeing your son because he’s wealthy,” I said. “And I’m not leaving him because you’ve decided I don’t belong.”

Margaret’s expression tightened.

“That was an extremely foolish thing to do. You have a daughter to think about.”

“I think about my daughter every day. That’s why I won’t teach her that somebody can buy the right to decide who deserves respect.”

I stood and picked up my purse.

“Thank you for the coffee.”

Margaret didn’t follow me to the door.

I managed to keep my composure until I reached the sidewalk. Then I sat in my car with both hands gripping the steering wheel.

I was proud that I’d refused the money.

I was also frightened.

Margaret had been cruel, but she’d touched a fear I’d been carrying since Daniel and I began dating. His world was full of people who owned buildings, traveled first class, and never worried about grocery prices.

What if he eventually grew tired of explaining me to them?

That evening, Daniel came to the bakery carrying a white rose.

I met him outside before he could enter.

“Sarah, what happened with my mother?”

I looked at the flower.

“I don’t think we should keep seeing each other.”

His face changed.

“What did she say?”

“This isn’t just about her.”

He waited.

“You’re used to a different life, Daniel. I don’t want you to wake up one morning and wonder why you got involved with someone who can’t keep up.”

He shook his head.

“That’s not how I feel.”

“Maybe not now.”

“Sarah, please talk to me. Don’t decide what I’m going to feel five years from now.”

I wanted to tell him about the check. Instead, I looked away.

“I need you to go.”

He stood there for a moment, then nodded.

“All right. But I love you, and I’m not going to pretend I don’t.”

I went inside and locked the door.

I didn’t notice Lily standing behind the curtain separating the counter from the kitchen.

She had heard everything.

PART 2 — THE CHRISTMAS EVE VISIT

Daniel went straight to his mother’s house that evening.

I learned the details later, but I can still picture him standing in her sitting room, looking at the torn check she’d left on the table.

“You offered Sarah money to leave me?” he asked.

Margaret folded her arms.

“I offered her a chance to improve her circumstances. She chose to make a dramatic point instead.”

“You tried to buy her out of my life.”

“Daniel, don’t be naive. She’s a young woman with a child, and you’re a wealthy widower. I have every right to be concerned.”

He looked toward a display cabinet filled with expensive gifts he’d bought her over the years.

“You know, every Christmas I spend hours trying to find something you’ll actually like. Sarah got up before dawn to bake you a cake, and you treated her like she was trying to rob us.”

Margaret’s expression faltered.

“I never asked her to bake me anything.”

“No. She did it because she wanted to thank me for buying Lily those shoes.”

“And you don’t see how that sounds? A man buys her child an expensive gift, and suddenly he’s part of their lives.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Mom, Lily drew those shoes on the back of a receipt because she knew Sarah couldn’t afford them. Sarah only accepted the gift after finding a way to give something back. Neither of them has ever asked me for money.”

Margaret looked away.

“You don’t understand what people will say.”

“I understand exactly what you’re saying. You think they’re beneath us.”

She didn’t answer.

“I love Sarah,” he continued. “And I love Lily. I’m not asking you to approve my choices, but you will not treat them like a problem I need to get rid of.”

He left before Margaret could respond.

Meanwhile, Lily had gone downstairs to Mrs. Parker’s apartment with a small box of fabric scraps.

I thought she was making Christmas decorations.

She was actually planning something that would change our family.

Two days later, on Christmas Eve, I was preparing dinner when Lily came into the kitchen wearing her red shoes.

She held a tiny wrapped package.

“Mommy, I want to visit Daniel’s mother.”

I nearly dropped the spoon in my hand.

“Absolutely not, sweetheart.”

“Why?”

“Because grown-ups have some things to work out, and you don’t need to be involved.”

Lily looked down at her package.

“But Mrs. Parker helped me make her something.”

I crouched beside her.

“Honey, you don’t have to fix anything between me and Daniel’s mother.”

“I know. I just wanted to give her a Christmas present.”

I looked at the package, then at my daughter.

“Did you hear Daniel and me talking outside the bakery?”

She nodded.

“You were both sad.”

I sat down at the kitchen table and pulled her onto my lap.

“We were. But that’s our problem, not yours.”

“I know. I still want to give her my present.”

I thought about refusing again.

Instead, I asked her what she’d made.

She unwrapped the package carefully.

Inside was a small red satin bow with a pin sewn onto the back. It was slightly crooked, and one edge had been folded unevenly.

“It’s like the bows on my shoes,” Lily explained. “Mrs. Parker said ladies sometimes wear pins on their coats.”

I held it in my palm.

“It’s beautiful.”

“Do you think she’ll like it?”

I couldn’t promise that Margaret would.

But I could make sure Lily wasn’t walking into that house alone.

I called Daniel.

He answered on the first ring.

“Sarah?”

“Lily made something for your mother. She wants to give it to her for Christmas.”

He was quiet.

“Are you comfortable with that?”

“I’m not sure. But I’d rather take her myself than let her think she did something wrong by caring about someone.”

“I’ll be there. And if Mom says anything unkind, we’ll leave.”

I took a breath.

“All right. We’ll come by at six.”

THE LITTLE RED BOW

Margaret’s house was brightly lit when we arrived.

I held Lily’s hand as we walked up the front steps. She wore her red shoes and a navy-blue coat Mrs. Parker had helped me alter.

A housekeeper opened the door and looked surprised.

“May I help you?”

“I’m Sarah Miller. Daniel knows we’re coming.”

Before she could answer, Margaret appeared in the hallway.

She stopped when she saw us.

“Sarah?”

I kept my voice steady.

“Good evening. Lily wanted to bring you something. We won’t stay long.”

Margaret looked at Lily.

“You brought me a gift?”

Lily stepped forward.

“Merry Christmas, Mrs. Margaret.”

She held out the little package.

Margaret accepted it carefully and removed the wrapping paper.

The red bow lay in her palm.

“I made it,” Lily said. “Mrs. Parker helped me sew the pin because I’m not allowed to use sharp needles by myself.”

Margaret examined the crooked stitching.

“It’s very pretty.”

Lily smiled.

“It’s like the bows on my red shoes. Daniel bought them for me, and I wanted to make something for somebody in his family.”

Margaret looked toward me.

I didn’t speak.

“Mommy says Christmas presents don’t have to cost lots of money,” Lily continued. “Sometimes you can just make something nice.”

Margaret’s fingers tightened around the bow.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she unclasped her pearl necklace, placed it on a side table, and pinned the little red bow to her gray sweater.

“How does it look?” she asked.

Lily grinned.

“Really pretty.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.
