Part 2 of 3

Elliot then contacted Rebecca’s workplace. After several transfers and a tense conversation with a supervisor, someone finally agreed to bring her from the warehouse floor.

Forty-five minutes later, Rebecca hurried into the law office wearing a reflective work vest over a plain navy shirt. Her employee badge was still clipped to her pocket.

When she saw Tyler, she rushed forward and wrapped both arms around him.

“Tyler, what happened? Why did you leave school alone?”

“Mom, Russell is selling Great-Grandma’s house.”

Rebecca looked at Elliot.

Her face shifted from fear to confusion.

Elliot had changed over the years. His hair was shorter, his face more serious, and the uncertain young man she once knew had become calm and confident.

But she recognized him.

“Elliot?”

He slowly stood.

“Hello, Rebecca.”

The Signature That Nearly Cost Her Everything

Rebecca stared at him, unable to speak.

Tyler looked from one adult to the other.

“You know each other?”

“We did,” Rebecca said quietly. “A very long time ago.”

Elliot did not allow the history between them to distract from the danger.

He showed Rebecca a copy of the durable power of attorney filed with the pending sale.

“This document does not simply allow Russell to pay taxes or arrange repairs,” he explained. “It gives him broad authority over the property, including the ability to transfer ownership.”

Rebecca’s face went pale.

“He told me it was for maintenance.”

“Did you read the full document before signing?”

She lowered her eyes.

“I had just finished a double shift. He said there were county deadlines. I thought I could trust my husband.”

Elliot’s voice softened.

“Trusting your husband is not a mistake you should be ashamed of. Misusing that trust is his decision, not yours.”

He explained that Rebecca could immediately revoke the power of attorney. The revocation would need to be signed, delivered to the closing office, and recorded with the county to prevent further use.

Within an hour, the necessary paperwork had been prepared.

Rebecca signed every page slowly this time.

She read each paragraph before placing her name at the bottom.

When the revocation was complete, Elliot sent formal notice to the title company, the buyer’s representative, and the county register of deeds.

Russell no longer had authority to sell the house.

Rebecca pressed the folder against her chest.

“How much do I owe you?”

“Nothing today.”

“Attorneys do not work for nothing.”

Elliot looked toward Tyler.

“Your son stopped something that could have taken years to repair. Consider this the first step in making sure he was heard.”

Before Rebecca could answer, her borrowed phone rang.

Russell’s name appeared on the screen.

She answered.

“Where are you?” he demanded. “Someone just told me you revoked the power of attorney. Who convinced you to do that?”

Rebecca looked at Tyler and then at Elliot.

“The better question is why you were trying to sell my grandmother’s house without telling me.”

Russell became silent.

Then his voice turned falsely calm.

“Rebecca, you don’t understand. It was an investment for our family.”

“Our family does not begin with you deceiving me.”

She ended the call.

The First Lie Was Older Than Her Marriage

That evening, Rebecca placed the revocation documents on the kitchen table.

When Russell arrived, he tried to behave as if nothing serious had happened.

“This has been blown completely out of proportion.”

“You told me I was signing tax documents.”

“I was trying to protect the property.”

Tyler stepped forward.

“You said she would not find out until the deed belonged to someone else.”

Russell’s face changed.

Tyler repeated the rest of the conversation, including the proposed price, the highway development, and Martin’s name.

Russell did not deny it.

Instead, he blamed Tyler for listening, accused Rebecca of being ungrateful, and insisted that he deserved a share because he had “managed the opportunity.”

Rebecca pointed toward the bedroom.

“Pack your things. You are leaving tonight.”

Russell stared at her.

“You have no idea who you are challenging.”

“For the first time, I know exactly who I am standing against.”

Three days later, Rebecca and Tyler visited Elliot’s office to begin a formal complaint.

While Elliot prepared the documents, Rebecca noticed an old photograph on a shelf behind his desk.

A nineteen-year-old girl stood beneath an apple tree beside a young man with untidy hair and an uncertain smile.

The girl was Rebecca.

She picked up the photograph.

“Why do you still have this?”

Elliot closed the office door.

He opened a drawer and placed six unopened letters on the desk.

“Because I never understood why you disappeared.”

Rebecca stared at the envelopes. Each one had been addressed to the apartment where she lived with her mother more than twenty years earlier.

“You never wrote to me.”

“I wrote six times.”

The truth arrived slowly.

Rebecca’s mother had disliked Elliot because he was a college student with little money. She had hidden the letters and told Rebecca that Elliot had arrived with another woman and no longer wanted her.

She told Elliot that Rebecca was engaged and refused to see him.

Both of them had believed the other had chosen to walk away.

“I checked the mailbox every day,” Rebecca said, tears gathering in her eyes.

“I waited outside your building for nearly three hours.”

“My mother told me you had forgotten me.”
