Part 2 of 2
How to Use Cloves for General Pest Control
Clove Sachets
- Place small sachets filled with whole cloves or clove powder in closets, drawers, and under furniture to help deter some insects.
Clove Oil Spray
- Mix 10–15 drops of clove essential oil with one cup of water in a spray bottle.
- Lightly mist areas such as doorways and window sills to help keep pests away.
Expanding the Use of DE and Cloves for Other Household Pests
Diatomaceous earth and cloves can also be used for general pest control in the home:
Cockroaches and Ants
- Sprinkle DE in kitchen corners, near baseboards, and at entry points to eliminate roaches and ants.
- Place clove sachets in pantries and near trash bins as an additional deterrent.
Fleas
- Apply DE to pet bedding and carpets to target fleas. Leave it for 24 hours before vacuuming.
- While clove sachets may have some repellent properties, they are not a proven flea control method.
Mosquitoes
- DE is ineffective against flying insects.
- Clove oil may help repel mosquitoes when used in sprays around window sills, door frames, and outdoor seating areas.
Final Thoughts: A Safe & Effective Pest Control Strategy
Diatomaceous earth is a well-documented natural remedy for bed bugs and other crawling insects. When used correctly, it provides a chemical-free way to manage infestations. However, cloves, while commonly believed to repel pests, do not have strong scientific backing for bed bug control. For best results, a combination of natural and professional pest control methods is recommended. If infestations persist, consulting a pest control expert is the safest approach.
