Prince Harry’s memoir Spare became a bestseller but deepened family rifts.
Harry’s story about losing his virginity at 17 with Sasha Walpole, who later came forward, drew attention.
Since stepping back from royal duties, Harry and Meghan remain polarizing figures.
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s rift with the royal
As Harry and Meghan settled in the US, some royals, especially William, believed Harry made a mistake. William had concerns about how quickly Harry’s relationship with Meghan moved, even before the 2018 wedding. Harry, however, saw this as criticism and felt William wasn’t supporting him.
Things got worse after the Oprah interview, where Harry and Meghan claimed a royal had questioned Archie’s skin color, and Meghan shared her struggles with mental health that were ignored by the family.

Harry and Meghan Markle have been very outspoken about what they think of the Royal Familu since the Oprah interview in 2020.
Harry’s revelations in ‘Spare’ book
In December, Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary aired, where they expressed ongoing disappointment with their royal life. A recurring theme was Harry’s feeling that Meghan wasn’t welcomed into the Royal Family, a sentiment Meghan has echoed herself.
Harry’s memoir, Spare, took things a step further, revealing intimate details about his royal upbringing, his grief after Princess Diana’s death, his army experiences, and his rift with his brother, William. He also criticized several family members, including Kate, Camilla, and William, for not being supportive enough during key moments.
While many found Harry’s book revealing, some were upset by his comments about Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, fearing they might end up like him. Royal expert Ingrid Seward even warned Harry against discussing William and Kate’s children’s futures.

“Harry should lay off Prince William’s children. In fact, he should lay off everybody and button it now,” she said. “It is a very dangerous road to go down, to start talking about other people’s children.”
She added: “And what he says Prince William said to him is absolutely right – they are William’s responsibility and not his, so he should keep out of it.”
“It is none of Harry’s business. But Harry has become dangerous to his family, and to himself, because he can lob in his little asides whenever he wants.”
Harry’s relationships & girlfriends over the years
In Spare, Harry opened up about his relationships, including his longest one with Chelsy Davy, which lasted from 2004 to 2010. They met during Harry’s gap year in Cape Town, though Harry clarified they had reconnected during a visit to Africa in 2004.
Harry explained that the relationship had two sides: one in Africa, and one in the UK. He ended things in 2010, citing the constant media scrutiny and the pressure it put on Chelsy. He mentioned that the paparazzi even placed a tracking device on her car.
“I understood she put her freedom first”
Chelsy Davy, Harry’s ex-girlfriend, valued her freedom over a life under constant media scrutiny. “What could I say to her? I would miss her, but I understood,” Harry reflected. His experience with the paparazzi, especially after seeing it destroy his mother, Princess Diana, and affect his wife Meghan Markle, made him understand her decision.
After Chelsy, Harry dated Florence Brudenell-Bruce, or “Flea,” for a short time. Their relationship was brief but “idyllic,” until the media began to invade their privacy. Florence’s mother eventually urged her to end it, which Harry confirmed in Spare.

Harry’s last girlfriend before meeting Meghan Markle
In Spare, Harry reflects on his past relationships, including with Cressida Bonas. He reveals how Cressida was the first person he could cry in front of after his mother’s death, a moment that deepened their bond. Despite their two-year relationship not lasting, Harry expresses deep gratitude for her support during that time.
Harry also shares that it was Cressida’s mother who warned her about the dangers of the press, echoing the familiar sentiment: “Mums do know best.”
Even after their breakup, Harry and Cressida remained close friends, and she attended his wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018.

Over the years, Harry was linked with several other women. But in the end, it was Suits actress Meghan Markle who stole his heart.
