Part 2 of 3

“My name is on it too.”

Her expression barely changed.

“Then lawyers can discuss that later.”

That word caught my attention.

Lawyers.

This had not been spontaneous.

They had thought about this.

I rushed downstairs.

Camden stood beside Tessa.

Sadie was near the tree holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Where exactly do you expect your daughter to sleep tonight?” I asked.

Camden sighed.

“Your father has room.”

I stared at him.

“There is a winter storm outside.”

“He lives nearby.”

Something inside me became very still.

I picked up Sadie.

Then I looked at Camden one last time.

“Look at her.”

He hesitated.

“What?”

“Look at your daughter and tell me that you are comfortable sending her out tonight because you want another woman staying here.”

“Don’t make Sadie part of this.”

“She became part of it the moment you packed her clothes.”

Patricia stepped forward.

“This conversation is finished.”

I ignored her.

“Camden, is this really your decision?”

He looked directly at me.

“Yes.”

One word.

That was all I needed.

I carried Sadie outside.

The Question Dad Asked Me

Dad listened to everything without interrupting.

When I finished, he remained silent for nearly a minute.

Then he asked one question.

“Do you want to save this marriage?”

I looked toward my sleeping daughter.

The answer surprised me with how quickly it came.

“No.”

Dad nodded.

“Are you certain?”

“He watched us leave.”

My voice cracked.

“He watched his own daughter go outside in that weather, Dad. I don’t know how to come back from that.”

Dad reached across the table.

“Then we don’t spend tomorrow convincing Camden to become someone he has already chosen not to be.”

I wiped my eyes.

“What do I do?”

“Tonight, you sleep.”

He squeezed my hand.

“Tomorrow, we start making decisions with facts instead of fear.”

The Documents Camden Had Forgotten

Christmas morning was strangely peaceful.

Sadie opened two small presents Dad had bought weeks earlier.

She laughed over a wooden train as though nothing in the world had changed.

After breakfast, Dad entered his study.

He returned carrying a navy document case.

He placed it on the table.

“You remember when you and Camden bought the house?”

“Of course.”

“You remember I helped with the purchase?”

I nodded.

Dad opened the case.

Inside were copies of property agreements, financing records, signatures, and trust documents.

“I didn’t simply give Camden money,” he explained. “My contribution went through a family trust.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you were my daughter, and I wanted your interest protected.”

He turned several pages.

Then he pointed to a highlighted section.

The trust held a secured financial interest connected to the property.

There were also conditions governing major financial decisions, transfers, and attempts to exclude one registered owner from the home without proper legal procedure.

I read the paragraph again.

Then again.

“Camden signed this?”

“Every page.”

“So he couldn’t simply order me out?”

“No.”

My heart began pounding.

Dad opened another section.

Certain violations allowed the trust to demand a review of the financial arrangement and request records relating to the property.

The house could not simply be sold or refinanced while the dispute remained active.

I looked at him.

“Did you think my marriage would fail?”

Dad shook his head.

“No. I wanted your marriage to succeed.”

Then he closed the folder.

“But wanting the best for someone does not mean refusing to prepare for the worst.”

We Chose Records Instead of Revenge

Dad never once suggested getting even.

Instead, he handed me a notebook.

“Write everything down.”

“Everything?”

“Times. Messages. Who arrived. What they said. What Patricia packed. What Camden said about the house. Everything you remember.”

So I wrote.

By lunchtime, Camden began calling.

Three missed calls appeared within ten minutes.

Then messages.

Where are you?

Why aren’t you answering?

We need to discuss what happened.

Then Patricia texted.

Bring Sadie over this evening. We need to discuss the situation as a family.

I stared at the screen.

She had not asked whether Sadie was safe.

She had not asked whether we had reached Dad’s house.

Dad read the message.

“Save it.”

“I want to answer her.”

“I know.”

“I want to tell her exactly what I think.”

Dad shook his head.

“Your anger may be justified, but anger is rarely the best record. Save facts. Let them keep talking.”

The Attorney Who Changed the Conversation

That afternoon, Dad called an attorney he trusted named Rebecca Harlan.

Rebecca had known him for years and handled property and family matters throughout northern Colorado.

She arrived later that day and spent nearly two hours reviewing everything.

Finally, she closed the folder.

“First, Camden does not get to decide by himself that you no longer have rights to your home.”

I released a breath I had not realized I was holding.

“Second, we need to address your access to marital finances immediately.”

I looked down.

“I don’t even know what is in most of the accounts.”
