Happy Soul Moral Stories

“Pregnant Again? That’s Three Babies in Three Years! Stop Telling Me It’s a Miracle!” I Cried When the Young Nun I’d Raised Like a Daughter Came Into My Office. “Mother, I’ve Never Been With a Man and Broken My Vows!” She Sobbed. No Men Were Allowed Inside Our Pennsylvania Convent, and Every Door Was Locked at Night. I Believed Her, but I Couldn’t Ignore What Was Happening. Then I Found a Small Strip of Medical Tape Beneath Her Chair. When Our Trusted Doctor Saw It, Her Face Went Pale. “Where Did You Find That?” She Whispered.

Part 2 of 3

She opened a folder containing copies of records from a reproductive tissue storage facility.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Ethan Parker.

“Who’s Ethan?”

Linda looked down.

“Helen’s son.”

I remembered Ethan’s funeral six years earlier. He had died of cancer at twenty-six. Before chemotherapy, he had preserved reproductive samples.

Linda pointed to three withdrawal records.

“These samples were transferred to Helen’s clinic. The authorization paperwork was questionable.”

The dates corresponded to Grace’s three pregnancies.

My mouth went dry.

“Are you suggesting Helen used her dead son’s samples on Grace?”

“I can’t prove what she did inside the infirmary,” Linda answered. “But I saw fertility equipment beside Grace’s file. When I asked Helen about it, she told me to mind my own business.”

“Why keep these copies?”

“Because I thought someone might need them.”

Linda’s hands trembled.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

I understood her regret.

With our attorney’s help, we reported the information to investigators and provided the records we possessed.

When I explained the discovery to Grace, she sat silently for several minutes.

“So my children might be related to Helen’s son?”

“It’s possible. We don’t know yet.”

She watched Daniel playing with wooden blocks.

“I trusted her. Every time she came here, I thought she was helping me.”

“I know.”

“She used to tell me I was special. That I shouldn’t worry about how the babies came into the world.”

That detail stopped me.

“She said that?”

Grace nodded.

“After Daniel was born. She said some things were better left to God.”

For years, Helen had encouraged us not to question the pregnancies.

Now I wondered whether those comforting words had been intended to keep us from discovering the truth.

PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE CONVENT DOORS

The Baby With Six Fingers

The investigation continued throughout Grace’s pregnancy.

Investigators requested medical records, medication logs, and documentation from the reproductive storage facility. Meanwhile, Grace began seeing a different physician and refused any treatment she did not fully understand.

Helen called repeatedly.

“Catherine, you’re frightening Grace unnecessarily,” she complained.

“She’s entitled to choose her own doctor.”

“I’ve cared for that girl for years.”

“Then you should understand why her consent matters.”

Helen hung up.

Some sisters struggled to believe our suspicions.

“Dr. Parker has helped this community for fifteen years,” Sister Margaret said. “She never charged us when we couldn’t afford treatment.”

“I remember,” I replied.

“Surely that counts for something.”

“It doesn’t answer what happened to Grace.”

When Grace went into labor, we drove to the hospital in Harrisburg.

Helen appeared in the waiting room carrying flowers.

“I heard Grace was here,” she said. “I’d like to see her.”

I stood between her and the maternity ward.

“Grace doesn’t want you involved in her care.”

“I’ve been there for her other deliveries.”

“That’s precisely why we’re asking questions.”

Helen’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea how much I’ve done for that young woman.”

“Then let the investigators determine what you’ve done.”

Several hours later, Grace delivered a healthy baby girl.

The nurse smiled as the infant wrapped her tiny fingers around her thumb. Then she noticed something unusual.

The baby had six fingers on her left hand.

The pediatrician explained that the additional finger was a condition called polydactyly, which could sometimes be inherited.

Grace stroked her daughter’s cheek.

“She’s perfect.”

“She is,” I whispered.

When I stepped into the hallway, Helen was still waiting.

“Is the baby healthy?”

“Yes.”

“And her hand?”

I stared at her.

“What about her hand?”

Helen’s face went pale.

“Someone mentioned something unusual.”

“She has an extra finger.”

Helen lowered her eyes.

I had seen her frightened before, at Ethan’s funeral. But this was different.

She looked as though she recognized something.

Later that afternoon, Linda arrived with an old photograph.

It showed Helen standing beside Ethan at a family gathering.

His left hand was visible.

Six fingers.

“He was born with it,” Linda explained.

Grace studied the photograph while holding her daughter.

“That doesn’t prove he’s her father.”

“No,” I said. “It doesn’t.”

“Then please don’t let anyone look at my baby like she’s a medical exhibit.”

I promised we wouldn’t.

Grace named her daughter Lucy, a name she had chosen weeks earlier.

The Signatures Grace Never Wrote

The new evidence prompted investigators to examine Helen’s clinic records more closely.

They discovered purchases of fertility-related equipment and sedatives corresponding to the periods surrounding Grace’s pregnancies.

More troubling were three consent forms bearing Grace’s name.

An investigator placed copies before her.

“Do you recognize these signatures?”

Grace examined the first page.

“No. That’s not how I sign my name.”

“Are you certain?”

“Absolutely. I’ve never seen these forms.”

A document examiner subsequently determined that the signatures were not genuine.

The reproductive storage facility’s records also revealed irregularities involving Ethan’s preserved samples.

Helen was questioned.

At first, she insisted the equipment had been used for other patients and that Grace had consented to her care.

But the records contradicted her account.

Eventually, Helen acknowledged that she had wanted something of Ethan to survive after his death.

Grace attended a meeting with investigators and legal counsel. I accompanied her.

Helen sat across the table, her hands clasped tightly.

“Ethan always wanted children,” she said.

Grace stared at her.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“He was twenty-six. He never got to have a family.”

“I’m sorry he died. But you don’t get to make me have his children.”

Helen began crying.

“I knew you’d love them. You have such a generous heart.”

Grace’s voice shook.

“You told me those injections were for headaches.”
