Prince Harry Opens up About King Charles amid Cancer Fight

Part 1 of 2

The Duke of Sussex has opened up about his strained relationship with the royal family and his hopes for mending it, as his father, King Charles III, fights cancer.

In a heartfelt interview aired by the BBC in early May, Prince Harry spoke honestly about the distance between him and his family, touching on past tensions and expressing a desire for healing and reconciliation.

In a revealing interview, Prince Harry opened up about the ongoing rift with his family, his fight for security in the UK, and his hopes for reconciliation—especially in light of King Charles’s recent cancer diagnosis. Harry reflected on the fallout from his memoir Spare, admitting that some royals may never forgive him, but emphasized that his core concern has always been safety, not revenge.

He expressed disappointment that King Charles refuses to speak with him about the security issue, claiming he’s been treated unfairly since stepping back from royal duties. Despite private security, Harry argued the current protection during UK visits is inadequate—especially when he’s not part of official royal events.

Harry also shared that he was never given a chance to contribute to the decision that removed his police protection, despite offering to pay for it himself. He called the 2020 decision “reckless” and claimed it endangered his family.

Still, the Duke of Sussex ended on a note of hope, referencing his work with the Invictus Games and Canada’s First Nations: “I’ve now found out the truth… So it would be nice to have that reconciliation part now.”

In a past interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry opened up about how stepping away from royal duties had affected him personally, and how he felt let down by the lack of recognition or support from his family.

He shared that no one had shown any regret. After years of reaching out and warning about what might happen, he said, “It’s been really hard because I’m trying. I am part of the system with them. I always have been.”

He also pointed out that while his brother is still tied to that system, “I have [left it].” When Winfrey asked whether his father had any negative views about the system, Harry replied, “He’s had to make peace with it.”

To understand how Harry ended up where he is now, we need to look back. As he shared in his book “Spare,” Harry was once seen as the more easygoing royal, often described as the fun-loving kid in contrast to his serious older brother, the Heir.

But everything changed when he lost his mother at 12. The grief took over. He struggled with school, acted out in anger, and found life under the constant media attention unbearable. He blamed the press for her death and never really came to terms with living in the public eye.

At 21, Harry joined the British Army. The discipline gave him a sense of purpose, and his two tours of duty earned him national hero status. Yet, the trauma never left him. He developed post-traumatic stress and suffered from panic attacks. More than anything, he craved real, meaningful connections.

Then Meghan entered his life. Their love story and wedding seemed like a fairy tale to the world. But behind closed doors, they were battered by an aggressive press, facing racism, false stories, and constant invasion of their privacy.

In the midst of ongoing struggles, Harry found solace in his family. As Meghan shared on May 4, 2025, the photo she posted of Harry with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, radiated warmth and connection. The black-and-white image, absent of words, spoke volumes on its own.

Captured in a lush garden, Harry is seen walking barefoot on the grass with his children. Archie, holding his father’s hand, walks beside him, while Lilibet sits on his shoulders, her legs dangling playfully. The backdrop of towering trees and blooming flowers adds to the peaceful, almost otherworldly atmosphere, underscoring a moment of pure family joy amid their challenges.

This tender snapshot serves as a reminder of the bonds that matter most, even when life’s pressures weigh heavily on them.
