The origins of this situation trace back to the infamous bridesmaids dress controversy.
In his memoir Spare, Harry claimed that Camilla was responsible for leaking the (false) story that Meghan had made Kate cry. According to him, even though Kate immediately clarified that the situation had actually unfolded the other way around, the damage was already done. The story had spread, eventually reaching a member of the royal family’s PR team—after Prince William shared the incident with Camilla and Charles during dinner.
“It was the most gung-ho member of Pa’s comms team, a true believer who’d devised and launched a new campaign of getting good press for Pa and Camilla at the expense of bad press for [me and William],” Harry wrote in his book, per Vanity Fair.
Camilla’s supposed master plan obviously worked.

It’s now clear that Kate and Meghan never formed the close bond as sisters-in-law that many had expected. Instead, their lives have taken them to completely different continents. Meanwhile, according to an insider, Camilla has achieved what she always wanted—becoming “universally beloved.”
“They definitely had their issues, but the animosity snowballed because of all the negative stories out there. Harry started accusing William of leaking things as well,” the source revealed.
Luckily, the rift between Kate and Meghan might not be beyond repair.
An insider told the news outlet that despite their differences, Kate and Meghan do “have a lot in common.” And there’s still hope—following Kate’s battle with cancer, she is said to be more open than ever to reconciliation.
“She’s so full of gratitude these days, and in her view, no one should waste time holding grudges. She is more than willing to make peace with Meghan – and Meghan is very much on the same page,” the source shared.
