“Stepmom Said She’d Come Back for Us.” An Army Colonel Found 5-Year-Old Twin Girls Sitting Alone at O’Hare—Then Realized Their Stepmother Had Already Boarded a One-Way Flight to London. He Stopped the Plane Before It Could Leave, but When Their Late Father’s Estate File Was Finally Opened, One Name Revealed He Had Prepared for This Long Before Anyone Knew the Girls Would Need Saving

Part 2 of 3

“There has been a misunderstanding.”

One officer asked where the twins were.

Meredith hesitated.

“Someone was coming for them.”

“Who?”

“A family friend.”

“Name?”

Another pause.

Meredith finally gave a first name.

No last name.

No telephone number.

No message confirming that anyone was actually coming.

When officers explained that the twins had been found alone, Meredith crossed her arms.

“They were perfectly safe inside an airport.”

Nathaniel heard the remark from several feet away.

For the first time that afternoon, his expression hardened.

“Five-year-olds are not luggage you leave beside a chair.”

Meredith turned toward him.

“And who exactly are you?”

Nathaniel answered quietly.

“Someone who noticed them.”

Their Father Was Gone

The story became more complicated when authorities began checking the family background.

The twins’ father, Wesley Vale, had passed away several months earlier following an unexpected illness.

Their biological mother had been absent from their lives for years.

That had left Meredith, their stepmother, as the adult currently responsible for them.

At first, Meredith insisted she had been overwhelmed.

She said she needed to travel overseas for a personal matter and believed someone else would collect the children.

But investigators quickly discovered another problem.

There was no documented childcare arrangement.

There was no confirmed relative waiting at the airport.

And Meredith’s London ticket was one-way.

Then authorities contacted the attorney who had handled Wesley’s estate.

That conversation changed the direction of everything.

“There is someone else,” the attorney said.

His name was Sullivan Pryce.

And Wesley had specifically named him in his estate documents.

The Name Hidden in the Estate Papers

Sullivan had been Wesley’s closest friend since college.

The two men had remained close for nearly twenty years.

Sullivan was not related to the twins by blood, but Wesley trusted him enough to make an unusual request in his estate plan.

If something happened to Wesley and the children’s mother could not care for them, Sullivan was to be contacted regarding guardianship.

The attorney had attempted to reach Meredith repeatedly after Wesley’s passing.

According to the records, several messages had been sent.

Letters had also been mailed.

Meredith had never completed the necessary meetings.

Instead, she continued caring for the twins while also controlling much of the household money available to support them.

Then investigators examined the finances.

Wesley had left substantial resources intended primarily for Hayden and Maren.

There were insurance proceeds.

Savings.

Education funds.

And monthly benefits intended to help provide for the twins.

Yet several withdrawals raised questions.

Money had been moved between accounts.

Some expenses did not appear connected to the children.

There were also recent transfers made shortly before Meredith purchased her overseas ticket.

Authorities immediately requested additional financial review.

Certain accounts connected to the children’s funds were temporarily restricted while the records were examined.

Suddenly, Meredith’s attempted departure looked far more complicated than a stressed parent taking an impulsive trip.

The Colonel Stayed

Nathaniel missed his flight.

Then he missed the next one.

He could easily have left after airport security became involved.

But every time he considered walking away, he looked through the glass wall of the family assistance room.

Hayden and Maren were coloring pictures.

They still believed their stepmother might return.

At one point, Hayden drew a house.

There were two little children standing outside it.

Beside them was a tall man.

Nathaniel pointed at the drawing.

“Who’s that?”

Hayden shrugged.

“Maybe someone who comes to get us.”

Nathaniel swallowed.

“Someone is coming.”

He did not know whether that was true yet.

But he desperately wanted it to be.

Maren looked up.

“Are you leaving too?”

Nathaniel pulled out the chair across from her.

“Not until I know you’re okay.”

For the first time all afternoon, she smiled.

A Man Was Driving Through the Night

Sullivan Pryce lived outside Indianapolis.

When investigators finally reached him, he thought the call was a mistake.

Then they mentioned Wesley.

Then the twins.

Sullivan stopped speaking.

The attorney explained the situation and confirmed the documents.

Sullivan had known about Wesley’s wishes in general terms, but after his friend’s passing, communication with Meredith had become difficult.

She had repeatedly told him the children needed time.

Eventually, she stopped responding altogether.

Now he understood why the attorney had been trying to reach her.

“Where are the kids?”

“O’Hare.”

“Are they safe?”

“Yes.”

Sullivan grabbed his keys.

“Tell them I’m coming.”
