Part 2 of 3

And then came the revelation that left me staring at my phone.

Madison had met Wesley months earlier through an architecture research group, before she understood his connection to Brandon.

Their brief relationship had ended before she became involved with Brandon.

Further testing indicated that the baby she was expecting was Wesley’s child.

Brandon was not about to become the baby’s father.

He was about to become its grandfather.

The Father Who Finally Understood What He Had Lost

Madison told Brandon everything that evening.

He called me the following morning.

For the first time since our separation, his voice sounded uncertain.

“Natalie, I have a son I never knew existed.”

“I heard.”

“My father knew about him. He kept us apart.”

I listened quietly.

“I missed twenty years of his life.”

Something about his words brought back the memory of Harper waiting beside the window for him to attend her school presentation.

“Brandon, you still have two daughters who have spent years waiting for you to show up.”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he whispered, “I know. And I finally understand.”

I wanted to believe him, but apologies could not erase years of disappointment.

A month later, he asked permission to visit the girls in Seattle.

I agreed, with one condition.

“They decide how much time they want with you. You don’t get to demand their affection.”

He accepted.

We met at a park near our apartment.

Sophie hugged him immediately.

Harper stood several feet away.

Brandon knelt in front of them.

“I made both of you feel less important than you are. I’m sorry.”

Harper’s eyes filled with tears.

“You missed my presentation, Dad. You promised you’d come.”

“I know, sweetheart.”

“You always promised.”

He looked down.

“You’re right. I can’t change those days, but I can stop making the same choices.”

Sophie asked the question I had been afraid to hear.

“Do you still wish we were boys?”

Brandon shook his head.

“No, sweetheart. I was wrong to make either of you feel that way. You’re both exactly who you’re supposed to be.”

It wasn’t a perfect reunion.

Harper still needed time.

But Brandon began calling regularly, attending school activities, and keeping the promises he made.

For once, his actions slowly began matching his words.

Thirty-Two Million Dollars and an Unexpected Ally

While Brandon worked on rebuilding his relationship with the girls, Valerie continued investigating my inheritance.

Several weeks later, she called with extraordinary news.

“Natalie, we’ve completed the preliminary valuation of your interest in Riverside.”

“How much?”

“Approximately thirty-two million dollars.”

I sat down.

I had spent years worrying about tuition, groceries, and whether I could afford a larger apartment.

All that time, a fortune connected to my father’s work had been hidden from me.

But Valerie wasn’t finished.

“There’s another development. Wesley Keating has transferred a substantial ownership interest to you.”

I immediately called him.

“Wesley, why would you do that? We’ve never even met.”

He answered calmly.

“Because I read the partnership agreements. Your father provided much of the original funding. I don’t want to benefit from money that should have been yours.”

I was speechless.

He explained that his own claim came through the Keating family’s architectural rights.

He had retained enough to protect his future child while helping restore what belonged to my father’s estate.

“My mother taught me that money should help people build a life, not keep families divided,” he said.

I thought about how differently Raymond had lived.

The financial dispute eventually ended in a negotiated settlement.

My ownership was formally recognized, the Keating family’s design rights were restored, and Raymond surrendered control of the company.

Brandon resigned from his executive position.

For the first time, he began considering a career based on his own interests rather than his father’s expectations.

The Sister I Never Knew Existed

Just when I believed the surprises were over, Valerie discovered another beneficiary in my father’s trust.

Her name was Meredith Prescott.

She was forty-three, two years older than me, and lived in Portland, Oregon.

She was my half-sister.

My father had been in a relationship with Meredith’s mother before marrying mine.

He had supported Meredith privately, but the two families had never truly connected.

Raymond had later interfered with attempts to bring us together because he wanted to maintain control over the trust.

When I finally met Meredith at a small café in Portland, I noticed something familiar about her smile.

She brought an old photograph showing our father standing beside two little girls at a summer picnic.

One was Meredith.

The other was me.

I remembered that day.

My father had introduced her as the daughter of a family friend.

“We met before,” I whispered.

Meredith nodded, her eyes shining.

“I’ve remembered you for years.”

We spent the afternoon talking about our childhoods, our families, and the father we had both loved.

For the first time, the hidden inheritance felt less important than the person sitting across from me.

Meredith worked in urban planning.

I worked in architectural design.

And Wesley had inherited his family’s passion for buildings.

By the end of our conversation, an idea had begun to take shape.

“What if we used part of the inheritance to build something Dad would have been proud of?” I asked.

Meredith smiled.

“I think he’d love that.”

Building Something Bigger Than Our Family Name

Within a year, we established the Prescott-Keating Foundation.

Our goal was to create affordable housing, educational opportunities, and scholarships for young people interested in architecture and engineering.
