“Take This Cabin, Sweetheart. You’ll Be More Comfortable Upstairs.” My Husband Said As He Handed The First-Class Key Card I Had Booked For Myself To His Mistress. He Knew I Became Severely Seasick. Then My Twenty-Six-Year-Old Daughter Took My Bag And Said, “Come With Me, Mom. I Already Booked Another Cabin For Us.”

Part 2 of 3

Emily went completely still.

I looked at my husband of twenty-eight years.

“You want me to tell your mistress that giving her my cabin was a misunderstanding?”

Richard sighed.

“I just want everyone to enjoy the weekend without unnecessary tension.”

My hands began trembling.

“You knew that cabin was important because I become sick at sea, yet you gave it away without asking me and now expect me to comfort her.”

He protested that Vanessa wasn’t feeling well either.

“Then you should have found another arrangement instead of deciding my comfort mattered less than hers.”

He insisted that I was exaggerating.

For the first time, I understood the problem clearly.

Richard didn’t necessarily believe I couldn’t be hurt.

He believed my pain would never become inconvenient enough to require him to change.

“I’m not going to make your affair easier for you, Richard, and I’m certainly not apologizing to Vanessa for something you chose to do.”

Emily stepped forward.

“Dad, go back to the person you gave Mom’s cabin to, because neither of us is responsible for making your lies comfortable.”

She gently closed the door.

I immediately began crying.

Emily hurried toward me, worried she had overstepped.

“You didn’t speak for me,” I told her. “You said something I’ve been afraid to say for years.”

She embraced me.

After I calmed down, I sent Rebecca the transportation schedule with a short message confirming that everything was ready.

Rebecca replied with affectionate thanks.

For once, I resisted the urge to check every arrangement again.

Half an hour before arrival, the island appeared beyond the window.

I opened the little notebook containing wedding schedules and guest information.

On its last blank page, I wrote a heading: Things I Want.

I didn’t yet know what belonged underneath it.

Nevertheless, I intended to find out.

Part 4: The Truth Waiting at the Harbor

The ferry reached Harbor Point Island beneath a clear afternoon sky.

Emily and I collected our luggage and followed the departing passengers toward the terminal.

Near the baggage carts, Richard was arguing with Vanessa.

She stood with her arms folded, her expression pale and furious.

“You swore Margaret wasn’t coming because the two of you were already separated!”

Richard attempted to lower her voice.

“Vanessa, things changed unexpectedly, and I’d rather explain everything somewhere private.”

She turned when she saw me.

“Margaret, were you already separated from Richard when he invited me here?”

I shook my head.

“No. I was trying to decide whether our marriage could survive after discovering his affair eleven days ago.”

Richard interrupted.

“We’ve been unhappy for a long time, Margaret, and you know perfectly well our marriage wasn’t working.”

I looked at him steadily.

“An unhappy marriage isn’t the same thing as a separation, and you had no right to tell someone otherwise.”

Vanessa stared at the cabin key.

She looked as though the truth had suddenly made the small plastic card unbearable.

Slowly, she placed it into Richard’s palm.

“You told me she knew everything and had accepted that you were moving on.”

He attempted to explain again.

She stepped away.

“I can’t continue this, Richard, because I don’t know what else you’ve been lying about.”

She apologized to me for the cabin incident before walking toward the information desk to arrange accommodation while waiting for a return ferry.

I didn’t know how much Vanessa had understood about Richard’s marriage before that afternoon.

I no longer wanted to investigate her decisions.

Richard watched her leave, then turned toward me.

“You’ve made an already difficult situation considerably worse, Margaret.”

I felt unexpectedly calm.

“No, Richard. I finally stopped protecting you from the consequences of what you’ve done.”

Our shuttle driver, Beth Parker, arrived moments later.

She greeted me warmly because we had exchanged numerous emails during the previous four months.

“You’re Margaret! Your arrangements have been wonderful, and every guest list has been perfectly organized.”

She loaded our luggage.

Then she asked whether my husband was joining us.

I looked toward Richard, who was attempting to call Vanessa.

“He’ll have to find his own way to the estate.”

For once, the words didn’t mean I intended to arrange transportation for him afterward.

Rebecca’s wedding venue, Seabrook House, overlooked a sheltered cove surrounded by pines.

Its weathered cedar shingles, white porches, and broad lawns gave the property an inviting simplicity.

Rebecca hurried down the porch steps when she saw us.

She hugged me enthusiastically, then noticed that Richard wasn’t present.

I asked whether we could speak privately.

On a side porch overlooking the water, I told her what had happened.

She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she covered her mouth.

“My brother actually brought another woman to my wedding weekend and gave her the cabin you’d booked for yourself?”

I nodded.

Rebecca gripped my hands.

“You haven’t ruined anything, Margaret, and I won’t allow Richard to make his behavior your responsibility.”

She arranged for Emily and me to share an upstairs bedroom in the guest cottage, near Eleanor’s accessible ground-floor room.

Then she embraced me again.

“You’re here because you’re my family, and that doesn’t change because my brother has forgotten how to treat you.”

An hour later, Richard arrived.

He insisted on speaking with me privately and complained that Rebecca already knew about his affair.

“You should have waited until after the wedding to tell her, Margaret.”

I reminded him that Rebecca had asked why he arrived separately.

He attempted to minimize the ferry incident once more.

“It was only a four-hour crossing. Why are you treating one cabin as though it represents our entire marriage?”

I finally told him.

“Because you took something you knew I needed, gave it to another woman, and expected me to smile while you did it.”

He stared at me.

“I never said you weren’t important.”

I held his gaze.

“You didn’t have to say it, Richard. You’ve spent years behaving as though my needs always come last.”

Then I opened the cottage door.

“I’ll be courteous at Rebecca’s wedding, but afterward we’re going to discuss living separately.”

His expression changed.

He had finally heard something he couldn’t dismiss as an argument about a ferry ticket.

Part 5: A Wedding That Belonged to Love

The following morning, Seabrook House filled with florists, caterers, musicians, and relatives carrying garment bags.

My first instinct was to begin organizing everyone.

I brought my emergency wedding tote upstairs, prepared to repair any problem before somebody noticed it.

A bridesmaid mentioned missing pearl buttons.

Before I could search through my supplies, Rebecca explained exactly where they were.

Then she invited me into her dressing room.

“I need you to sit with me for a while, Margaret, and not because I’ve forgotten how to manage my wedding.”

I laughed softly.

She sat beside me.

“I remember when Richard first brought you home. I was fourteen, and you seemed like the most glamorous woman I’d ever met.”

I remembered that visit.

Her mother burned dinner, and I helped prepare sandwiches while everybody laughed around the kitchen table.
