Grant contacted building security.

Before anyone could respond, the nursery camera feed disappeared.

The office lights remained on, but every screen connected to the security system went dark.

A recorded voice announced that a building emergency had been detected.

Grant moved toward the hallway.

“Stay here.”

Audrey was already behind him.

“My sons are in that room.”

They reached the nursery within seconds.

Two security officers stood near the entrance, conscious but confused.

A harmless sleep-inducing vapor had entered through a maintenance vent.

The nursery door stood open.

One crib was empty.

Audrey stopped breathing.

Her second son remained beneath his blanket, beginning to stir.

But his brother was gone.

On the empty mattress lay a white envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Nolan stood in a medical room beside Lenora.

Between them was a newborn baby wearing a silver identification bracelet from Silverpine.

Written across the back were the words:

ONE CHILD CAME FROM YOU.

THE OTHER WAS CREATED FOR NORTHSTAR.

Audrey gripped the edge of the crib.

Paige stared at the photograph.

“That bracelet is current,” she whispered. “This image was taken tonight.”

Audrey lifted her remaining son and held him tightly.

She could hear Grant ordering every exit checked and every underground garage sealed.

But whoever had entered the building had planned carefully.

This was not a random intrusion.

Someone believed they had a claim over her child.

Nolan’s Final Warning

Audrey’s phone rang.

Nolan’s name appeared on the screen.

She answered immediately.

“Where is my son?”

His breathing sounded uneven.

“I do not have him.”

“You are standing beside a newborn in a photograph taken tonight.”

“That baby is not one of the twins.”

Audrey froze.

“What are you saying?”

“My mother planned for you to find that picture. She wants you confused about which child is yours.”

“Tell me where my baby is.”

“I am trying to help him.”

Audrey heard movement in the background.

Then Lenora’s voice.

“Nolan, end the call.”

Nolan spoke quickly.

“Go to the abandoned Langford estate. There is a locked chamber beneath the chapel. Your father left records there for you.”

“Why would my father know about this?”

Nolan’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because he never truly left the program.”

The call ended.

Seconds later, Grant received an alert.

A private service exit had opened during the security failure.

A black medical vehicle had left the underground garage nineteen seconds before the doors sealed.

The registration traced back to Northstar Legacy Foundation.

Audrey held her son and stared at the photograph again.

Hours earlier, she had believed Nolan and his mother were the center of her nightmare.

Now she understood that they were merely participants in something much older.

Something connected to her family.

Something that had begun before her marriage, before the twins, and perhaps before Audrey was even born.

Her phone lit with a live video.

Her missing son lay safely inside a temperature-controlled medical bed.

A masked doctor adjusted a monitor beside him.

Lenora stood several feet away.

She no longer looked powerful.

She looked terrified.

Then a man stepped into view.

His hair was silver. His shoulders were thinner than Audrey remembered, but she recognized his eyes immediately.

They were the same eyes she saw every morning in the mirror.

The man looked directly into the camera.

“Audrey,” he said, “I am sorry it took your children to bring you back to me.”

The video ended.

Audrey stared at the blank screen.

Her father had been declared gone nearly twenty years earlier.

Yet he was alive.

And he was standing beside her missing son.

Audrey kissed the child in her arms and turned toward Grant.

Her grief had not disappeared.

Her fear had not disappeared.

But something stronger had taken their place.

Determination.

“Prepare the car,” she said.

Grant met her eyes.

“Where are we going?”

Audrey looked toward the dark northern horizon, where the abandoned Langford estate had waited in silence for eighteen years.

“We are going home.”
