Happy Soul Moral Stories

“THAT BABY ISN’T MINE! I’M NOT PAYING A DIME FOR ANOTHER MAN’S CHILD!” My Husband Shouted in Court Just Eight Days After My Emergency C-Section. His Lover—My Former Best Friend—Sat Beside Him, Smirking as His Attorney Accused Me of Cheating and Demanded I Leave With Nothing. My Husband Leaned Back and Sneered, “GO AHEAD. PROVE SHE’S MINE!” I Didn’t Argue. I Pulled a Sealed Hospital Envelope From My Diaper Bag and Handed It to the Judge. She Read the First Page, Then Suddenly Looked at My Husband. “Mr. Gable, WHO GAVE YOU THIS DNA REPORT?”

Part 2 of 3

“Dad, can you drive Daisy and me to the courthouse?”

“Of course, sweetheart. Are you sure you’re up for this?”

I looked at my sleeping daughter.

“No. But I’m going anyway.”

The Report Christopher Couldn’t Explain

Back in court, Judge Sterling examined Christopher’s DNA report.

“Mrs. Gable, do you have evidence challenging these findings?”

I opened my envelope.

“Yes, Your Honor.”

Mr. Whitlock stood.

“My client objects to further delay based on unsupported accusations.”

“Then perhaps he’d prefer an independent laboratory result,” I replied.

I handed the certified report to the clerk.

Judge Sterling reviewed it carefully.

“This report establishes Mr. Gable’s biological paternity with a probability exceeding 99.9 percent.”

Belinda turned toward Christopher.

“Chris, what’s going on?”

Christopher leaned forward.

“That has to be wrong.”

“Your attorney arranged your sample collection,” I reminded him.

Mr. Whitlock looked sharply at his client.

“Christopher, you told me the original report was reliable.”

“It is!”

“Then how do you explain this?”

Christopher’s face reddened.

I presented the documentation identifying Daniel Lawson as the supervisor connected to the first report.

“Belinda’s brother works at the laboratory that produced my husband’s evidence,” I explained. “I also couldn’t obtain satisfactory information about the collection of my daughter’s sample.”

Judge Sterling examined the records.

“The reliability of the original report is now seriously disputed. The court will require proper verification before relying on it.”

Belinda moved her hand away from Christopher’s arm.

I reached into the envelope again.

“Your Honor, there’s also a financial transaction that may explain why my attorney withdrew last night.”

Christopher immediately stood.

“Clara, that’s enough!”

The judge’s voice hardened.

“Sit down, Mr. Gable.”

I handed over the records showing the $42,000 transfer.

Mr. Whitlock studied them.

“Christopher, did your company make a payment to Raymond Cross?”

“I don’t know anything about that.”

“Then why is your company’s property address connected to the sender?”

“Ask the accountant!”

I watched Christopher’s attorney slowly close the folder.

He looked furious.

And for the first time that morning, his anger wasn’t directed at me.

PART 2 — THE TRUTH HE COULDN’T BUY

The Insurance Application

Judge Sterling carefully reviewed the financial records.

She explained that the transaction required authentication and further investigation before anyone could conclude it involved improper conduct.

Then I produced the insurance application.

“Your Honor, I also discovered a life insurance application bearing a signature I didn’t write.”

Christopher’s expression changed immediately.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake, Clara! We talked about insurance!”

“We discussed protecting Daisy financially,” I replied. “I never agreed to this application.”

“You signed a stack of paperwork. You probably don’t even remember!”

I looked directly at him.

“I remember my own signature.”

Belinda leaned toward him.

“Christopher, what insurance policy?”

He ignored her.

Mr. Whitlock examined the document.

“Did your wife sign this application?”

“Our financial adviser handled everything.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Christopher shifted in his chair.

“I assumed she signed it.”

“You assumed?”

“Look, she was exhausted and pregnant. She barely remembered what day it was!”

The words struck me harder than I’d expected.

During my pregnancy, Christopher had repeatedly dismissed my concerns by suggesting I was confused, emotional, or forgetful.

Now he was using those same excuses in front of a judge.

“I was pregnant, Christopher. I wasn’t incapable of reading a document.”

Judge Sterling directed that the original application and related communications be preserved for proper examination.

She made no finding of forgery, but the disputed signature raised questions that couldn’t simply be ignored.

Christopher leaned toward Mr. Whitlock.

“You need to put a stop to this.”

His attorney looked at him.

“I need you to stop giving me surprises.”

Belinda stared at Christopher.

“You told me Clara was hiding money from you.”

“Belinda, be quiet.”

“You said she was trying to ruin your business!”

“Not now!”

The judge called a recess.

As everyone stood, I noticed Christopher gripping the edge of the table so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.

He had entered the courtroom expecting me to defend myself against his accusations.

Instead, he was being asked to explain his own documents.

The Investigators Outside

Several weeks earlier, I’d reported suspicious transactions involving Christopher’s company.

While reviewing our marital assets, I’d noticed payments to unfamiliar vendors, irregular transfers, and account activity that didn’t match the financial disclosures he’d provided.

I couldn’t determine exactly what had happened.

But I’d worked in financial compliance long enough to recognize transactions that deserved closer examination.

I submitted the information to the appropriate authorities.

I didn’t know how far their investigation had progressed until two investigators appeared at the courthouse during the recess.

A woman in a charcoal suit introduced herself as Special Agent Brenda Fox.

She explained that investigators were examining several entities associated with Christopher’s construction business.

The judge made clear that the criminal investigation was separate from our family-law proceedings.

Agent Fox approached Christopher and his attorney outside the courtroom.

“Mr. Gable, we’d like to speak with you regarding several financial transactions. You’re entitled to consult your attorney before answering questions.”

Christopher looked stunned.

“Did my wife send you?”

“Our investigation began before today’s hearing, sir.”

Belinda stepped forward.

“Are you investigating the investment accounts?”

Christopher turned sharply.

“Belinda, don’t say anything.”

She stared at him.

“You told me those accounts were perfectly legal.”

“They are!”

“Then why are investigators asking about them?”

“Would you stop talking for five minutes?”

Agent Fox addressed Belinda calmly.

“Ms. Lawson, your name appears on certain account records. We’d appreciate an opportunity to speak with you separately.”

Belinda’s face went pale.

“Christopher told me I was just helping him manage investments.”

“Belinda!” he snapped.

She stepped away.

“Don’t you dare shout at me. You told me Clara was trying to steal everything from you!”

Christopher looked toward the courthouse doors.

“This isn’t the place.”

“Funny. You didn’t mind humiliating your wife in there.”

I heard the exchange from several feet away.

For months, Belinda had accepted Christopher’s explanation that I was unreasonable, suspicious, and determined to take his money.

Now she was discovering what happened when she asked questions he didn’t want to answer.

The Conversation by the Window

Belinda approached me near the hallway windows.

My father had arrived to help with Daisy, and he was sitting nearby with her carrier.

“Clara, please. I need to explain something.”

I looked at her.

“Go ahead.”

She twisted her hands together.

“I didn’t know the DNA report was false.”

“Your brother supervised the laboratory.”

“Christopher asked me for Daniel’s contact information. He said he needed the test expedited because you were refusing to cooperate.”

“I was recovering from surgery.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew I was in the hospital, Belinda.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He told me you were fine.”

I waited.

“He also said you’d admitted Daisy might not be his.”

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?”

She wiped her face.

“I wanted to.”

At least that answer was truthful.

Belinda told me Christopher had claimed our marriage had been over for more than a year. He’d described me as controlling and accused me of trying to take his business.

“He said you were only staying married because of the money,” she whispered.

“And that made it acceptable for you to sleep with my husband?”

“No. I know how awful it sounds.”

“You held Daisy’s ultrasound picture at my baby shower.”

Belinda started crying harder.

“Clara, I’m sorry.”

“You helped my mother decorate the nursery. You sat at my kitchen table and asked whether I was excited to become a mother.”

“I know.”

“And all that time, you were seeing Christopher.”
