“I told Ryan he needed to handle it privately.”

“Privately.”

“There was no reason to hurt you while you were pregnant.”

I looked at her.

“So you waited until I was ten centimeters dilated?”

Eleanor pressed her lips together.

“That was Ryan’s decision.”

My daughter made a small sound in the bassinet.

Eleanor leaned toward her.

“She’ll still be taken care of.”

I put my hand on the bassinet before Eleanor could touch her.

She looked at me.

“What does that mean?”

“Don’t start.”

“You said she’ll still be taken care of. What does that mean?”

Eleanor folded her hands.

“Santiago is a boy. Naturally, his position in the family will be different.”

My phone vibrated.

Claire.

I opened the message.

CALL ME. NOW.

I looked at Eleanor.

“Give me a minute.”

She stepped into the hallway.

I called Claire.

“How bad?”

“Bad enough that I’m coming over.”

“Tell me.”

Papers rustled on her end.

“I’ve found a little over four hundred thousand dollars in company expenses connected to Madison.”

I sat straighter.

“What expenses?”

“Apartment lease. Mercedes. Medical bills. Two credit cards. Travel. Furniture.”

“Authorized by Ryan?”

“Most of it.”

I looked through the glass in the door.

Eleanor was standing in the hallway checking her phone.

“Can we suspend his financial authority?”

“Under the misconduct provision? Yes, pending review.”

Ryan had signed that provision himself.

I remembered the meeting.

He had barely read it.

He had joked that corporate lawyers could turn a grocery list into twelve pages.

“Do it.”

“Danielle, once we do this, he’ll know.”

“I know.”

“There’s no quiet way back afterward.”

I looked at my daughter.

Her hospital bracelet said BABY GIRL MERCER.

My maiden name.

Ryan had insisted she would not carry his.

Fine.

“Do it.”

Eleanor came back in five minutes later.

She picked up her purse.

“I hope you two can eventually discuss this like adults.”

I almost answered.

Instead, I opened the bassinet drawer and folded one of my daughter’s blankets.

Eleanor reached the door.

“Danielle?”

“Tell Ryan to sleep well tonight.”

She stared at me.

I smiled.

“He has a busy morning coming.”

I Left Before He Could Come Home

I was discharged early the following afternoon.

Claire drove me.

My daughter slept in the back seat while I sat beside her.

We went to the house Ryan and I had shared for six years.

I didn’t take furniture.

I didn’t take anything belonging to the company.

I packed clothes, jewelry I had owned before the marriage, family photographs, my passport, tax records, my grandmother’s silver bracelet, and everything the baby needed.

Then I opened Ryan’s home-office safe.

I knew the combination because it was our wedding date.

Inside were property documents, old contracts, two watches and a USB drive.

I almost left the USB there.

Then I noticed the label.

ACCOUNTING — Q1/Q2.

I put it in my purse.

On the dresser was our wedding photograph.

Ryan had one hand around my waist.

I was laughing at something outside the frame.

I found a black marker.

Across the glass, I wrote:

YOUR HEIR CAN PAY THE MORTGAGE.

Then I carried my daughter outside.

At 7:42 that evening, Ryan called.

I didn’t answer.

7:44.

7:47.

7:51.

Then a text.

CALL ME.

Another.

WHAT DID YOU DO?

Then:

MY CARD ISN’T WORKING.

I fed my daughter before responding.

Finally, I typed:

Ask your attorney.

He called immediately.

This time, I answered.

“Danielle, what the hell is going on?”

“Which part?”

“My accounts are frozen.”

“Your personal checking account isn’t.”

“You know what I mean.”

I did.

His corporate card.

Company transfer authority.

Investment approval access.

Expense privileges.

All suspended.

“The trust committee opened a review.”

“You opened a review.”

“Yes.”

“You cannot use the company to punish me because you’re angry about Madison.”

My daughter started fussing.

I lifted her against my shoulder.

“Madison’s apartment was paid with company money.”

Silence.

“Who told you that?”

“Good night, Ryan.”

“Danielle—”

I ended the call.

For the first time since he had walked into my delivery room, Ryan understood that I wasn’t waiting for him to decide what happened next.


The Number Kept Growing

The four hundred thousand dollars was only the beginning.

Once the review started, Claire found additional payments routed through consulting expenses, travel reimbursements and vendor accounts.

The total passed six hundred fifty thousand dollars.

Ryan called it sloppy accounting.

Then Claire found a $1.7 million transfer.

It had gone to a private investment firm called Horizon Capital Partners.

I was sitting at Claire’s kitchen table when she showed me the authorization record.

“Ryan approved it.”

“For what?”

“He says it was a strategic investment.”

“Was it?”

Claire turned her laptop toward me.

“We can’t find a legitimate investment agreement.”

Then she pointed to another line.

The electronic authorization had been initiated using credentials connected to Madison.

I stared at the screen.

“She had access?”

“Apparently.”

I called Ryan.

He answered immediately.

“Finally.”

“Did you give Madison access to your corporate credentials?”

Silence.

“Ryan.”

“She handled things for me sometimes.”

I put the phone on speaker so Claire could hear.

“You gave an employee access to authorize company transactions?”

“She wasn’t just an employee.”

“Apparently not.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Act like I’m an idiot.”

Claire looked at me.

I didn’t answer for a second.

“Then explain the $1.7 million transfer.”

Ryan stopped talking.

That was when I became frightened.

Not of him.

Of what he didn’t know.
