Preparing coconut oil at home is a simple and satisfying process that gives you a clean, natural product without additives. Whether you plan to cook with it or use it for hair, skin, or oral care, homemade coconut oil ensures purity, aroma, and nutrients that are often lost in commercial processing. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to creating your own high-quality oil from whole coconuts.
What You’ll Need
- Three to four mature coconuts
- Water
- Blender or food processor
- Cheesecloth or a fine strainer
- Large bowl
- Pan
- Airtight glass jar
Step 1. Extract the Coconut Meat

Break the coconuts open using a hammer or a heavy kitchen tool. Set the coconut water aside for drinking or later use.
Separate the white flesh from the shell, then rinse it well to remove any bits of shell or fiber.
Step 2. Blend Into a Smooth Paste
Cut the coconut flesh into small pieces and add it to a blender.
Use a two-to-one ratio: two parts coconut meat to one part water.
Blend until the mixture becomes thick and creamy, stopping occasionally to scrape down the sides so everything combines evenly.
Step 3. Strain and Collect the Coconut Milk
Place a cheesecloth over a large bowl, or use a fine mesh strainer.
Pour the blended mixture in and squeeze firmly to extract as much coconut milk as possible.
Repeat until all the blended pulp has been pressed.
The amount of milk you collect directly affects how much oil you will produce.
Step 4. Separate the Cream From the Liquid

Leave the bowl of coconut milk uncovered at room temperature for about twenty-four hours.
A thick, creamy layer will gradually rise to the top.
After this resting period, refrigerate the bowl for a few hours. The cream will firm up, making it easy to scoop off.
Remove the solid layer and discard the liquid underneath.
