I Didn’t Beg, Argue, or Remind Them Whose Name Was on the Paperwork. I Just Replied, “Perfect. Let the Real Family Pay for It Too,” Opened the Contract… and Made One Decision Before Midnight. By the Time Everyone Arrived at the Harbor the Next Morning, My Sister Was Still Smiling—But Not for Long

Part 2 of 3

A man from the charter company was speaking with Ryan. A few guests had begun drifting closer.

Then Ryan turned toward us.

He looked confused rather than angry.

“Megan?”

“Hi, Ryan.”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

He pointed toward the marina office.

“They’re saying you’re the contract holder.”

Ashley stepped forward.

“Ryan, can we not do this here?”

He looked at her.

“You told me your company was sponsoring this.”

Nobody spoke.

That was the first moment I knew Ashley had lied about more than the money.

I looked at her.

“You told him your company paid for this?”

“I said they were helping.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No. You said your company was covering the event as part of some client entertainment arrangement.”

Several people nearby suddenly became interested in their phones.

Ashley lowered her voice.

“Can we please talk privately?”

Ryan didn’t move.

“Who paid for this?”

Ashley looked at me.

I answered.

“I put down the deposit. The contract is mine.”

Ryan’s face went still.

“How much?”

Ashley interrupted.

“Ryan—”

“How much?”

“The full event could have been around eighty-four thousand dollars.”

He looked at Ashley.

“You told me it was basically free.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

I almost said something.

Instead, I waited.

Ryan asked me another question.

“Why did you cancel it?”

I pulled out my phone, opened Ashley’s message and handed it to him.

He read it.

His jaw tightened slightly.

Then he handed the phone back.

“She uninvited you?”

“Last night.”

Mom stepped in.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

I looked at her.

“Which part?”

She didn’t answer.

So I did.

“Ashley decided the engagement party should only include ‘real family.’ I agreed. I just stopped paying for it like family.”

Dad rubbed both hands over his face.

Ashley finally looked directly at me.

“You embarrassed me in front of everyone.”

“I canceled a contract in my name.”

“You knew what would happen.”

“Yes.”

That answer seemed to surprise her.

I wasn’t going to pretend otherwise.

She had expected me to feel guilty enough to reverse it.

For once, I didn’t.

Mom pulled me aside.

“Can’t you sign another contract?”

“Probably.”

“Then do it.”

I looked at her.

“Who’s paying?”

She blinked.

“We’ll figure that out later.”

“No.”

“Megan, please. Look at all these people.”

“I am looking.”

Dad joined us.

“I’ll help.”

“How much?”

He hesitated.

That was enough.

I shook my head.

“I’m not signing another contract.”

Behind us, Ryan was still talking to Ashley.

His voice wasn’t loud, but the people closest to them could hear.

“Did you know Megan’s name was on the contract when you told her not to come?”

Ashley crossed her arms.

“Yes.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Then what did you think was going to happen?”

Ashley glanced at me.

Her face looked irritated now, almost offended that the answer wasn’t obvious.

“I thought she’d get over it.”

Ryan didn’t respond.

Ashley added:

“She always does.”

Nobody needed me to explain anything after that.

I saw Dad look down.

Mom stopped touching my arm.

For years, our family had treated every individual incident like a misunderstanding.

But Ashley had just explained the entire system in six words.

She always does.

I picked up my purse.

“I’m going to my hotel.”

Mom called after me.

“Megan, don’t leave like this.”

I turned around.

The floral sign was still standing behind them, bright and expensive beside an empty dock.

“I’m not the one who canceled my invitation.”

Then I walked away.

For once, nobody followed me far enough to stop me.

The Money Ashley Hadn’t Mentioned

The calls started again that evening.

I ignored most of them until Dad sent me a text asking if he could come to my hotel.

He arrived alone.

He sat across from me near the lobby coffee bar and placed his phone on the table.

“I need to ask you something.”

“Okay.”

“How much did Ashley actually give you?”

“Twenty-three hundred.”

He stared at me.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

He leaned back slowly.

“She told me she’d already paid you most of it.”

I didn’t say anything.

Dad rubbed his thumb along the edge of his phone.

Then he told me something I hadn’t known.

Three months earlier, he had transferred Ashley $16,000.

She told him it was for wedding deposits.

“Did you ask where it went?” I said.

“She sent me a list.”

“Receipts?”

He shook his head.

I didn’t need to say anything else.

Ryan called me the following afternoon.

His first question was simple.

“Did Ashley ever tell you she got a big bonus?”

“Yes.”

“She told me the same thing.”

“I never saw it.”

He was quiet.

Then he asked if I could send him proof of what Ashley had paid me.

I told him I would send only my own transaction records and the charter paperwork. I wasn’t interested in becoming an investigator in their relationship.

“That’s fair,” he said.

Before hanging up, he added something that surprised me.

“I’m sorry about yesterday.”
