Three Days After Selling My Restaurant Empire for $20 Million, I Told My Family the Money Was Frozen. The Next Morning, My Parents Summoned Me to Their Atherton Mansion and Demanded I Sign Away My Grandmother’s Inheritance in Exchange for a $50,000 Loan. My Sister Secretly Recorded Me, Waiting for Me to Break Down. But I Calmly Refused—Because My Attorney Was Already Standing Outside Their Door

Part 2 of 3

“You need to understand that the family trust isn’t your personal emergency fund.”

I hadn’t mentioned the trust.

Not once.

“I wasn’t asking for trust money, Dad.”

He looked briefly uncomfortable.

My mother quickly changed the subject, but the evening never recovered.

Within twenty minutes, they were making excuses to leave.

Sloane abandoned her dessert.

My father left most of his expensive wine untouched.

After they drove away, I stood in the kitchen and watched their taillights disappear.

I had told them I was in trouble.

None had asked whether I was frightened or needed someone to talk to.

Their only concern had been protecting money.

The Messages My Sister Forgot

Rachel arrived the following morning carrying an older iPad.

“Sloane left this at your house last night,” she explained. “I was going to return it, but there’s something you should know.”

The device was still signed into Sloane’s messaging account.

A family conversation was visible on the screen.

Rachel had noticed a notification mentioning my name.

I asked her to leave the device untouched while I called Benjamin.

He advised us not to search through private conversations and to preserve the device as it was, so he could determine what information could lawfully be used.

The notification alone was enough to alarm me.

It included part of a message from my father.

We need the paperwork completed before Natalie starts asking questions.

Another visible notification from my mother read:

Tell her the waiver protects everyone.

And then there was Sloane’s message.

If she gets emotional, I’ll record it. People will believe she’s being unreasonable.

I sat down slowly.

My sister wasn’t merely prepared to watch me struggle.

She wanted to turn my reaction into entertainment and use it to damage my reputation.

Benjamin contacted me later that afternoon.

“Your father has arranged a meeting at the house tomorrow, correct?”

“Yes. He says he wants to help me.”

“Then I recommend that I attend as your attorney.”

I considered his suggestion.

“Can you wait outside until I call you in?”

There was a pause.

“As long as you don’t sign anything before I arrive.”

I promised I wouldn’t.

The Meeting at the Atherton Mansion

My parents’ Atherton property sat behind tall hedges and a private gate.

It was the kind of house designed to impress visitors before they even reached the front door.

Inside, the dining room looked more like a corporate boardroom than a family gathering place.

My father sat at the head of the long walnut table.

My mother occupied the chair beside him.

Sloane sat across from me, her phone resting near her coffee cup.

A thick folder waited at my place.

“We’re glad you came,” my mother said. “We know you’ve been under tremendous pressure.”

Her voice sounded gentle, but her eyes remained fixed on the folder.

My father slid it toward me.

“We’ve prepared a solution to your financial difficulties.”

I opened it.

The first page carried a formal heading:

Beneficiary Release and Waiver of Accounting Rights.

The document proposed that I relinquish certain beneficial interests under my grandmother’s trust and withdraw requests for financial accountings.

In exchange, my parents would provide a limited personal loan.

I read the proposed amount twice.

Fifty thousand dollars.

My father wanted me to surrender potentially millions in trust benefits and important rights to financial information in exchange for a loan I would eventually have to repay.

“Who prepared this?” I asked.

“Our family attorney,” my father replied.

“Has he reviewed it with an independent attorney representing me?”

My father frowned.

“You’re making this unnecessarily complicated.”

“I’m asking a reasonable question.”

My mother leaned forward.

“Natalie, we’re trying to keep you from making another expensive mistake.”

I looked toward Sloane.

Her phone was angled slightly upward.

“Are you recording this conversation?” I asked.

She blinked.

“Why would I record you?”

“Because your camera is pointed directly at me.”

She lowered it a few inches.

“You’re being paranoid. Everyone is trying to help.”

I returned my attention to the paperwork.

Several provisions attempted to limit future claims concerning prior trust administration.

Another required me to acknowledge that I had received sufficient financial information, although I hadn’t.

Benjamin had already warned me that such language could become the center of a serious legal dispute.

“I’m not signing this,” I said.

My father folded his hands.

“Then don’t expect us to rescue you when your financial problems become public.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“Dad, did Grandma ever tell you why she included me in the trust?”

He seemed surprised.

“Because you were her granddaughter.”

“She told me she wanted every grandchild to have an opportunity to build an independent life.”

My mother sighed.

“This isn’t the time for sentimental stories.”

I closed the folder.

“You’re right. It’s time to discuss the numbers.”

The Attorney They Never Expected

My father stared at me.

“What numbers?”

I reached for my phone and sent a brief message.

A few moments later, the doorbell rang.

My mother glanced toward the hallway.

“Are we expecting someone?”

“I am,” I answered.

The housekeeper opened the front door.

Benjamin Cross entered carrying a dark leather briefcase.

My father’s face tightened.

“Who invited you into my home?”

Benjamin stopped beside my chair.
