But When Both Boys Won First Place, He Finally Recognized Them… and a Secret His New Wife Had Hidden for 13 Years Began to Unravel

Part 2 of 3

Reid leaned forward.

The judge smiled.

“Please congratulate Reid Winslow and Nolan Winslow of Wake County Applied Science Academy.”

For a moment, neither boy moved.

Then the auditorium erupted in applause.

Their teacher stood immediately.

Several classmates began cheering.

Reid looked at me, his eyes wide.

“Mom, did she really say both our names?”

I was already crying.

“She did. Now go get your awards.”

They walked toward the stage together.

And from the front row, Grant slowly stood.

I watched his expression change as he studied their faces.

He recognized the dark eyes, the familiar smiles, and the resemblance he had overlooked that morning.

He turned toward me.

For the first time in thirteen years, he looked genuinely uncertain.

The Father Who Finally Remembered

After the ceremony, reporters gathered around the winners.

Reid and Nolan explained how they had developed their invention using donated materials and borrowed laboratory equipment.

One reporter asked who had encouraged them to continue when their early prototypes failed.

Nolan pointed toward me.

“Our mom. She always believed we could figure things out.”

Reid smiled.

“She even learned enough about circuit boards to help us troubleshoot.”

I laughed through my tears.

“Only the easy parts.”

“There weren’t any easy parts,” Nolan replied.

I had barely finished hugging them when I heard Grant behind me.

“Laurel, we need to talk.”

I turned.

Bianca stood beside him, looking uncomfortable.

“About what?” I asked.

His eyes moved toward the boys.

“They’re mine, aren’t they?”

I stared at him.

“You already knew that.”

“I mean, those two boys are Reid and Nolan?”

“Yes, Grant. They’re sixteen now.”

He looked toward the stage again.

“I barely recognized them.”

“You haven’t seen them since they were three.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I thought you didn’t want me involved.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You left, Grant. You stopped visiting. You stopped answering messages. I never told you to stay away from your children.”

Bianca shifted beside him.

Grant hesitated.

“I received something years ago. A letter saying you wanted me to leave you alone.”

I frowned.

“What letter?”

He looked toward Bianca.

And suddenly, she seemed very interested in the floor.

A Conversation the Boys Deserved

Reid and Nolan approached us carrying their medals.

Nolan looked from Grant to me.

“Is everything all right?”

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Your father would like to congratulate you.”

Grant stepped forward.

“You both did an incredible job today.”

“Thank you,” Reid replied.

“I’m proud of you.”

Nolan’s expression became serious.

“You don’t really know us.”

Grant swallowed.

“You’re right.”

“Mom came to every competition,” Nolan continued. “Even when she had to change her work schedule.”

Reid added, “She helped us find equipment and drove us everywhere.”

Grant nodded slowly.

“I understand that I missed a lot.”

“You missed almost everything,” Reid said.

There was no cruelty in his voice.

Only a fact that couldn’t be softened.

Grant looked as though he wanted to say more, but he couldn’t find the words.

Finally, he asked whether they might be willing to speak with him another day.

Nolan glanced at me.

“Do we have to decide now?”

“Absolutely not,” I answered. “You can take all the time you need.”

Reid nodded.

“Then we’d rather celebrate with our team tonight.”

Grant stepped aside.

“I understand. Congratulations again.”

For once, he didn’t argue.

The Letter That Changed Everything

That evening, our school team gathered at a casual restaurant near the university.

The boys were laughing with their classmates when Grant approached me outside.

Bianca and Preston were waiting beside their vehicle.

Grant held an old envelope.

“This is what I was talking about,” he said.

I examined the faded paper.

Inside was a short, unsigned note claiming that I wanted no further contact between Grant and the twins.

It also warned him not to involve Bianca or her relatives.

I read it twice.

“I never wrote this.”

Grant rubbed his forehead.

“I believed you had asked someone to write it for you.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“I tried once. Then I convinced myself that staying away was what you wanted.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“One unanswered call doesn’t explain thirteen years, Grant.”

He didn’t disagree.

Then he showed me a photograph on his phone.

It was another envelope, discovered recently among old family belongings.

The handwriting was familiar.

I remembered seeing those narrow, slanted letters on holiday cards Bianca had sent years earlier, back when she and Grant were still coworkers.

I looked across the parking lot.

Bianca was watching us.

“Where did you find this?” I asked.

“In a box at my mother’s house.”

“Did you ask Bianca about it?”
