What we know about Zohran Mamdani’s wife Rama as trait never seen in NYC First Lady before makes history

Part 2 of 2

How Did Mamdani and Duwaji Meet?

The couple met on the dating app Hinge in 2021, and Mamdani later joked during an interview with The Bulwark:

“So there is still hope in those dating apps.”

At that time, he had just been elected to the New York State Assembly.

They tied the knot earlier this year, marrying in a City Hall ceremony in February.

During his victory speech, Mamdani gave a heartfelt tribute to his wife, saying:

“To my incredible wife, Rama, hayati — there is no one I would rather have by my side in this moment, and in every moment.”

(Hayati means “my life” in Arabic.)

Duwaji’s Role and Future Plans

While Duwaji has largely avoided the spotlight during the campaign, she has been actively involved behind the scenes — advising on social media strategy and campaign design.

Mamdani has addressed questions about her limited public appearances, explaining his desire to protect her from the harsh world of politics. In a post shared on Instagram, he wrote:

“If you take a look at Twitter today, or any day for that matter, you know how vicious politics can be. I usually brush it off, whether it’s death threats or calls for me to be deported. But it’s different when it’s about those you love.
Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race — which should be about you — about her.
Rama isn’t just my wife; she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.
You can critique my views, but not my family.”

At present, it’s unclear whether Rama Duwaji will take on any official duties as First Lady, but one thing is certain — New York City is entering a new and historic chapter, led by a couple who represent a fresh, modern vision for the city’s future.
