Today, we put on underwear without a second thought. But before elastic was invented — in the late 19th century — it was a completely different experience! Women’s undergarments were held in place around the waist using a ribbon or drawstring sewn all the way around the fabric.

To tighten and adjust them, the string had to be tied… at the front.

And that’s exactly where the tiny bow was born: it simply marked the place where the waist cord was fastened! Back then, it wasn’t decorative at all — it served a purely practical purpose.
