“You Don’t Need Three Bedrooms for One Person,” My Mother Said as She Gave My $500,000 Condo to My Pregnant Sister at Christmas Dinner. I Didn’t Argue—I Sold It Before New Year’s Eve. When They Arrived With Moving Trucks, Their Smiles Disappeared

Part 2 of 3

I looked through the windshield at my parents’ glowing Christmas lights.

“Because I may be selling it.”

The Unexpected Visitor

The next morning, I was drinking coffee when my front door suddenly opened.

My father walked in using the emergency key I had given my parents years earlier.

Travis followed him carrying a measuring tape.

I stared at them.

“Good morning to you too.”

Dad ignored my tone.

“We need the property papers.”

Travis was already measuring the living room.

“This wall could come down,” he said. “Then we’d have room for a bigger dining table.”

I stood.

“Why do you need my papers?”

Dad answered impatiently.

“Travis wants the condo placed under his business entity. His accountant says that’s cleaner.”

Travis stopped measuring.

“It’s just paperwork.”

I crossed my arms.

“You entered my home without permission to ask me to sign my condo over to your company?”

Dad frowned.

“Brooke, stop talking like we’re strangers.”

Then Travis’s phone rang.

He stepped toward the balcony.

I was not trying to listen, but his voice changed immediately.

“I said I’m handling it.”

Pause.

“You’ll have the documents before the deadline.”

Another pause.

“No, I don’t need another week.”

He turned and noticed me watching.

Then he ended the call.

His face had lost its color.

That phone conversation stayed with me.

Why was Travis so desperate for paperwork involving my condo?

The Document He Left Behind

Ten minutes later, Dad and Travis left after I refused to produce anything.

As Travis pulled on his coat, several papers slipped from his folder.

He grabbed most of them.

He missed one.

I found it beside the entry table.

It was a financing statement from a private lender.

At first, I assumed it had nothing to do with me.

Then I saw my address.

My condo had been listed as supporting collateral for a business loan worth $165,000.

There was supposedly a signed authorization from my mother.

The problem was simple.

My mother had no ownership interest in my home.

And the signature on the document did not look right.

I called Neil immediately.

Within an hour, he had reviewed the scanned document.

“Brooke, do not confront anyone yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if this is what it appears to be, Travis may have represented property he didn’t control as security for a loan.”

My stomach turned.

Suddenly the Christmas announcement made sense.

They did not simply want my condo because Kendra needed another bedroom.

Travis needed control of the deed.

Fast.

I called a property acquisition company that had made me an unsolicited offer months earlier.

Their previous offer had been $492,000 cash.

It was less than I could have received through a traditional listing, but there were no financing delays.

I called them.

“Is the offer still available?”

The agent checked.

“Yes, assuming inspection and title are clean.”

“How quickly can you close?”

“Four business days.”

I looked around my living room.

For years, that place had represented everything I had built for myself.

Selling it quickly hurt.

But losing control of it would hurt more.

“Start the paperwork.”

I Packed My Life Before They Could Take It

Over the next three days, my family called constantly.

Mom left voice messages telling me to stop being selfish.

Dad demanded the deed.

Kendra accused me of stressing her during pregnancy.

Travis sent increasingly nervous messages asking when he could meet me at a notary.

I answered none of them.

Instead, I packed.

I sold several large pieces of furniture to an antique dealer.

I donated what I no longer wanted.

I moved my personal records, electronics, clothes, photographs, and important documents into storage.

Then I changed every access code connected to the property.

On December 29, I sat across from Neil and signed the closing documents.

After fees, the money landed safely in my account.

The condo was no longer mine.

That evening, I booked a flight to Santa Barbara, California.

Not forever.

Just long enough to decide what I wanted the next chapter of my life to look like.

For once, nobody in my family would decide it for me.

New Year’s Eve

Kendra had told everyone she was moving into her “new home” on December 31.

I knew because she had posted about it repeatedly.

That morning, I was sitting outside a small rental cottage near the California coast when my phone exploded with calls.

Mom.

Dad.

Kendra.

Travis.

Mom called six times.

Then Dad.

Then Kendra.

Finally, I answered the video call.

Kendra appeared first.

She was standing in the hallway outside my former condo.

Behind her were my parents, several moving boxes, and Travis.

“Where are you?” she shouted.

“California.”
