Part 2 of 3

Bradley stepped away to speak with the restaurant manager.

My handbag was still on the chair beside him.

When he turned, I reached inside, retrieved my phone, and called the one person I knew would answer.

Spencer.

My brother picked up on the second ring.

“Hey, Nat. Everything okay?”

I tried to speak calmly, but my voice trembled.

“Spencer, I’m at a restaurant near Central Park. Bradley is causing a scene, and I’m having some pain.”

His tone changed immediately.

“Are you safe right now?”

“The staff is helping me.”

“Good. Stay with them. I’m only a few blocks away, and I’m coming to get you.”

I closed my eyes.

“Please hurry.”

“I’m on my way. And Natalie, you don’t have to handle this alone.”

When I ended the call, Bradley was watching me.

“Who did you call?”

“My brother.”

He gave a short laugh.

“Wonderful. Let him come. Maybe I can explain to him how the real world works.”

I didn’t answer.

There was no point.

Spencer would be there soon.

Chapter 5: The Man Who Walked Through the Doors

Approximately fifteen minutes later, the restaurant’s front doors opened.

A tall man in a charcoal-gray suit entered, followed by a woman carrying a leather briefcase.

I recognized him immediately.

Spencer.

My brother was thirty-nine, calm under pressure, and known for rarely raising his voice.

He didn’t need to.

He walked directly toward our table.

“Natalie.”

The relief I felt was so overwhelming that I nearly cried.

“Spencer.”

He placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

“Are you all right?”

“I think so. The manager called for medical help.”

Spencer nodded, then looked at Bradley.

“I’m Spencer Whitcomb. Natalie’s brother.”

Bradley extended his hand with a forced smile.

“Bradley Kessler. I assume you’ve heard of me.”

Spencer didn’t take his hand.

“Yes. I know exactly who you are.”

Something about his tone made Bradley hesitate.

The woman beside Spencer stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitcomb, the car is ready, and the medical team has been notified.”

Bradley looked between them.

“Whitcomb? As in Whitcomb Capital?”

Spencer met his eyes.

“That’s correct.”

Bradley gave an uncertain laugh.

“Interesting coincidence.”

“It isn’t a coincidence. Natalie is my younger sister.”

My husband turned toward me.

“Natalie, what is he talking about?”

For the first time in four years, I didn’t feel the need to make myself smaller.

“My full name is Natalie Whitcomb. My father is Frederick Whitcomb.”

Bradley’s expression changed.

He knew that name.

Anyone working in corporate finance knew that name.

Spencer continued.

“Our family controls Whitcomb Capital, which holds a significant portion of your company’s outstanding debt.”

Bradley slowly lowered himself into the chair.

“That can’t be right.”

“You can verify it with your finance department.”

I watched my husband’s confidence disappear.

Only minutes earlier, he had told me that my family was powerless.

Now he was struggling to find the right words.

Chapter 6: The Truth Behind His Billion-Dollar Empire

Spencer pulled out a chair beside me.

“Natalie, I want you to focus on getting checked by a doctor. The business matters can wait.”

But Bradley wasn’t ready to let the conversation end.

“Spencer, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”

My brother looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because our companies have a professional relationship.”

“They do. And that relationship has raised some serious concerns.”

Bradley’s face tightened.

The woman with the briefcase introduced herself as Cecilia Warren, senior counsel for Whitcomb Capital.

She explained that Whitcomb’s financial team had been reviewing discrepancies in Kessler Technologies’ quarterly reports.

Several loans had been secured using financial statements that appeared inconsistent with the company’s underlying records.

Bradley shifted uncomfortably.

“Those are accounting issues. My finance department handles them.”

Cecilia remained composed.

“Your signature appears on the certifications submitted to our firm.”

“I sign hundreds of documents.”

“Then you should have no objection to an independent review.”

Bradley looked toward Spencer.

“Are you threatening my company because of a family disagreement?”

Spencer shook his head.

“No. These concerns existed before tonight. They will be handled through the proper legal and financial channels.”

Then his voice became firmer.

“But what happened to my sister tonight is a separate matter, and I will make sure she has the support she needs.”

Bradley turned toward me.

“Natalie, you should have told me who your family was.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Would it have changed how you treated me?”

He opened his mouth but said nothing.

“You thought I had nowhere to go, Bradley. That’s why you felt comfortable speaking to me that way.”

His eyes moved toward the other diners.

He was finally embarrassed.

But not because of what he had done.

He was embarrassed because people had learned the truth about me.

Chapter 7: The Most Important Heartbeat

By the time we reached NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the discomfort had eased.

Still, my brother insisted that I receive a complete examination.

I was admitted for observation, and an obstetrician named Dr. Evelyn Brooks performed an ultrasound.

I held my breath as the monitor came to life.

Then I heard it.

My daughter’s heartbeat.

Strong and steady.

Dr. Brooks smiled.

“Your baby looks healthy, Natalie. Her heartbeat is normal, and everything appears reassuring.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“So she’s okay?”

“Yes. What you experienced may have been a Braxton Hicks contraction, but we’ll continue monitoring you to be safe.”

I covered my face with my hands.
