Everyone Called My Mother the “Perfect Grandmother” After She Came to Help My Recovering Wife and Our Newborn—But When the Nursery Camera Mysteriously Went Offline for the Fourth Time, I Hid a Second One on the Bookshelf and Pretended to Go to Work… What I Saw Made Me Change the Locks That Same Day

Part 2 of 3

“Garrett told me not to worry about the laundry yet.”

Patricia gave a short laugh.

“Garrett worries too much because you encourage him to.”

Audrey said nothing.

My mother continued.

“Every woman gets tired after having a baby. That doesn’t mean everyone else should wait on her all day.”

I stared at the screen.

Audrey’s voice became smaller.

“My doctor told me to take it easy for a while.”

“You have been taking it easy,” Patricia replied. “Maybe a little too easy.”

I wanted to start the car and race home.

Then Theo began crying.

Audrey immediately tried to stand.

She moved slowly, gripping the arm of the chair.

“He needs to eat.”

My mother stepped in front of her.

“Sit down. I’ll handle him.”

“Mom Patricia, please. I need to feed him.”

Patricia picked Theo up before Audrey could reach the crib.

Then she glanced at the small table beside Audrey.

A glass of water sat next to Audrey’s medication.

My mother moved her hand.

The glass fell.

It shattered on the hardwood floor.

Water spread beneath the chair.

Several tablets landed in the mess.

Audrey stared at her.

I stared at my screen.

Patricia looked down and said calmly:

“See what happens when you get yourself worked up?”

The Moment I Stopped Making Excuses

Audrey reached for Theo.

“Please give him to me.”

My mother stepped back.

“Clean that first.”

Audrey looked at the floor.

“I can’t get down there safely yet.”

“Then maybe you should think about how you’re going to manage when nobody is here to do everything for you.”

“Please, Patricia. Give me my baby.”

“After you clean the floor.”

Audrey’s face crumpled.

She slowly began lowering herself toward the floor, keeping one hand against the chair for support.

That was enough.

I had spent days looking for innocent explanations.

There were none left.

But I also knew that if I stormed into the house, Patricia would immediately rewrite what had happened.

She would claim Audrey dropped the glass.

She would say she was only helping.

And Audrey was in no condition for an argument.

So instead of calling my mother, I called my sister.

Her name was Lindsey.

She lived about twenty-five minutes away.

Lindsey had always been closer to Mom than I was, and whenever Patricia became difficult, Lindsey was usually the first person to defend her.

“Garrett? What’s going on?”

“I need you to watch something.”

I sent her part of the recording.

She called me back almost immediately.

“Garrett, Mom can be controlling sometimes, but maybe there’s context—”

“Keep watching.”

Silence.

Thirty seconds passed.

Then another thirty.

When Lindsey finally spoke again, her voice had changed.

“She did this to me.”

I didn’t understand.

“What?”

“When we were kids. When Dad wasn’t home. She’d move things or break something and then insist I’d done it. Sometimes she’d keep pushing until I apologized just to make it stop.”

She took a shaky breath.

“I spent years wondering whether I remembered it wrong.”

Suddenly, the situation became much larger than one terrible morning.

This was not new behavior.

It was an old pattern with a new target.

“Lindsey, I need you to help Audrey.”

“Tell me what to do.”

My Sister Walked Through the Front Door Smiling

I gave Lindsey simple instructions.

Go to the house.

Stay calm.

Do not accuse Mom of anything.

Get Audrey and Theo outside.

Fifteen minutes later, I saw Lindsey arrive through the camera feed.

The transformation in Patricia was immediate.

The moment she heard the doorbell, her expression softened.

“Lindsey! What a wonderful surprise!”

“I thought I’d take Audrey out for a little while.”

Patricia hesitated.

“She’s very tired today.”

“Exactly. I found someone who specializes in helping new mothers recover comfortably. I thought I’d take her over there.”

Before Patricia could object, Lindsey headed upstairs.

She entered the nursery and saw Audrey sitting beside the mess on the floor.

For a moment, Lindsey’s face hardened.

Then she remembered the plan.

She walked over to Audrey.

“Come on. You’re going with me.”

Patricia appeared in the doorway holding Theo.

“She’s been emotional all morning,” my mother said. “I think staying home would be better.”

Lindsey helped Audrey stand.

“I’ll take Theo too.”

My mother’s arms tightened slightly around him.

“He’s perfectly comfortable with me.”

Lindsey looked directly at her.

“Mom, give me my nephew.”

There was no shouting.

No argument.
