I stayed with him until his last breath. And his children threw me out as if I were a stranger.

Part 1 of 2

I met Felipe when I was already 56. He was a widower; I was divorced, carrying the quiet ache of a worn-out heart and dreams I’d long let go. Life had humbled us both. We weren’t looking for fireworks — just something warm, safe, steady.

We shared eleven gentle years. Peaceful years of small joys: lazy breakfasts, market strolls, quiet evenings with tea by the fire. There were no grand gestures, no arguments — just life, softly shared. His adult children were polite, but distant. I didn’t intrude. They were his family, not mine.

Then everything changed.

Felipe was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. It took hold quickly. I became everything for him — his hands, his strength, his breath.

I carried him when he could no longer walk, tended to his wounds, held his hand through the pain, whispered comfort when he couldn’t speak. Nurses would say, “You’re remarkable. Not everyone could do this.” But it wasn’t remarkable to me. It was love.

One night, near the end, he gripped my hand and murmured,

— Thank you, my love…

By morning, he was gone.

The funeral was brief. His children arranged it all. I was allowed to attend — nothing more. No words. No thanks. No acknowledgment. I didn’t expect any. Even though that house had been our home, Felipe never transferred ownership. “It’s handled,” he always said. “They know you’ll stay here.”

A week after the funeral, the notary called.

Everything — every asset — had gone to his children. My name wasn’t anywhere.

— But we lived together for eleven years… I whispered.

— I’m sorry, — he said, expressionless. — Legally, you’re no one.
