It is a resident all year round and does not migrate, and it is renowned for both its distinctive eating in couples behaviour and its loud, clear cries and songs.

Its head crest, brilliant red plumage, and face features that resemble a black mask make it easy to identify, and it is noted for its strong territorial defence.
